Later, Prussia increasingly became the largest and most dominant of the German states, but their newspapers were kept under tight control. On July 1852, Frederick Douglass told us 174 years ago that celebrating liberty while practicing injustice is a ‘hollow mockery.’ Today, as America turns 250, his words are a mirror to the absolute betrayal of American values by Hegseth and the other loyalists of this second Trump administration and I like other most Americans still mourning I this betrayal of the stripping the names of true American patriots to play political games with Confederate legacies is unforgivable. From the deadly policy failures at Lackland AFB to the state-sanctioned violence on our streets, this administration proves daily that they care more about culture wars than American lives. On this Memorial Day, we honor General Richard E. Cavazos is an American hero whose legacy cannot be erased by political games. 🎖️
Long before political maneuvers stripped his name from the Texas base formerly known as Fort Cavazos, General Cavazos dedicated his life to defending the United States. He became the first Latino four-star general in the history of the United States Army, Cavazos shattered barriers and redefined American military leadership. During his early service in the Korean War, his legendary bravery earned him profound respect, culminating in a posthumous Medal of Honor for his extraordinary gallantry. Under relentless enemy fire, he repeatedly put his life on the line to lead nighttime raids and personally rescue his wounded soldiers. In 2023, his home state’s massive installation previously named after a Confederate general was triumphantly renamed Fort Cavazos to finally reflect the values of the republic he bled to protect.
Despite his undeniable heroism, in June 2025, the Trump administration spearheaded by Secretary of war crimes Pete Hegseth moved deliberately and aggressively to strip General Cavazos’ name from the base, reverting it back to Fort Hood by exploiting a technical loophole to bypass federal law. This decision forms part of a broader, highly criticized campaign by the current Pentagon leadership to erase modern trailblazers. Both historians and civil rights advocates have condemned this move as a “racist vendetta” and a “kick to the gut” for Latino veterans, calling it a deliberate act of historical erasure. However, the fight to honor our true heroes isn’t over. In response to these rollbacks, champions in Congress are actively fighting back. Proponents of the 2023 Naming Commission are working tirelessly to legally restore the base names that honor diverse American patriots rather than divisive historical figures. Congress is currently focused on protecting these changes rather than undoing them. General Richard Cavazos remains a legend regardless of the sign on the gate. On this Memorial Day, we remember a veteran who fought two wars: one for his country and one for his right to exist. 🇺🇸🏳️‍🌈Harvey Milk (Known as the first openly gay mayor of San Francisco) served as US Navy as a Navy diving officer during the Korean War. But in 1955, he was forced out with a “less than honorable” discharge just for being gay. In 2021, the Navy tried to right that wrong by naming a ship in his honor. It was more than just a name—it was a message that every sailor’s service counts. Last year, when the felon and chief came back into office. His spending all erasing and whitewashing American history, restoring confederate names on military bases, restoring confederate statues, gutting civil rights and DEI. In June 2025, this regime officially stripped his name from the USNS Harvey Milk, renaming it the USNS Oscar V. Peterson. Pete Hegseth stated the move was to “take the politics out of ship naming” and align with a “warrior culture”. This decision, announced during Pride Month, sparked massive outrage, with leaders like Nancy Pelosi calling it a “shameful, vindictive erasure”. However, the fight is not over, in Congress, Democrats are rallying to overturn the Pentagon’s mandate, and this crucial issue is shaping up to be a defining focal point leading into the 2026 midterms Democratic members of Congress, including Senator Adam Schiff, have worked on resolutions to oppose these name changes and restore the honors originally bestowed upon civil rights icons. by @dre7095

Happy belated birthday to a True Trailblazer, Lt. Gen. Arthur J. Gregg. Known as the first African American three-star general in U.S. Army history. Born on May 11, General Gregg broke barriers in a segregated military, rising from an enlisted corporal to the ultimate pinnacle of military logistics leadership. In 2023, a historic, bipartisan act of Congress sought to permanently honor him alongside Lt. Col. Charity Adams—leader of the historic, all-Black, all-female 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion—by renaming Fort Lee to Fort Gregg-Adams. But under the current administration, War Secretary Pete Hegseth systematically stripped their names away. Using a bureaucratic loophole, Hegseth and the administration reverted the base name back to “Fort Lee”. They claimed it was for “morale” and named it after a non-Confederate “Lee” (Buffalo Soldier Pvt. Fitz Lee), but the American people see right through this whitewashing. It is a deliberate effort to erase Black military history and appease the ghost of Confederate General Robert E. Lee.
The disrespect doesn’t stop there. Hegseth also stripped the name of gay rights icon and Navy veteran Harvey Milk from the USNS Harvey Milk, renaming it the USNS Oscar V. Peterson. He did this at the start of Pride Month under the guise of “taking politics out of naming”—an insult to the LGBTQ+ patriots who have served in silence for decades.
The absolute worst part about these actions is that during congressional hearings, it was exposed that Hegseth never even called the families of these 2023 heroes to tell them their fathers and mothers were being erased. As Senator Tim Kaine revealed, the families found out from the media! Hegseth continues to attack real American patriots, calling diversity “the single dumbest phrase in military history”—flat out disrespecting the 40% of active-duty service members who are people of color.

As of May 2026, a strong bipartisan coalition in Congress, local communities, and descendants are fighting back. Lawmakers have pushed forward amendments to block the Pentagon from funding these vindictive name changes. by @dre7095
