We have lost many icons this year but hearing about MU really shook me and it took a minute to reflect on how much he had featured in so many meaningful moments in my life. FFD has been the soundtrack, especially in the 2000s. When I heard the news and it all sank in I wrote this poem and was moved to share it today.

How many ROADYS were based on this true story?
Whilst we trudge through these DARK DAYS,
DEL FUEGO warms our wairua
And we FLASHBACK to a golden era
Where he was the architect
RAY RAY and CAYS CRAYS became the blueprint
This was a new kind of dub
HOPE was gifted to a generation
We gathered under willow trees
Danced for free
Inner city gigs where city lights became our Korowai
Parks and Festivals were our playground again
Piano keys rang over eggs Benny
Where we midnight maurauded through to 3 am kitchen korero
We began to feel
live
like we Matter
Horns soared
Jazzy beats blazed.
Vocals dripping with honey, soothed.
Each chord
Painstakingly placed with purpose
Mu stitched it all together
He crafted the Soundscapes of my favourite moments
More than a moment
A movement
ERNIE delivered wanton fashion and Pāua wontons.
Transfixed us with sound
So not even an EYE could WANDER
These tunes were the soundtracks to treasured times
Tears of joy, of laughter, of loss
Like now
They say sound never truely ceases to exist
He lives on in us
We carry his flame
His records forever spinning and reminding us
Mu

Rest in Eternal Peace my Bro ❤️

12 years ago today my bro. Turns out this getting old business can be more challenging than we thought. May have been a little easier to navigate if you were still by my side in person. Your laughter, your mischief making face and hugs made everything a little easier.

I can almost tangibly feel your love and guidance when you are most close. I appreciate all that you continue to teach me. Will be forever grateful for the last gift you blessed me with. Which is the relationship with your incredible whanau whom you would be so proud of! Your anniversary has become quite the tradition and has become a huge part of my healing journey and one of my pou throughout the year.

This time that we share together to both mourn and celebrate you is so precious. It definitely makes me miss not getting old together and the things we could be sharing with one another. I wonder what you would be listening to, what shows you would be watching, what sneakers you would be rocking. What you would watch on TikTok and what reels you would share with us. Most importantly what you would be cooking, your original love language. We had all your favourites last night.

I really wish you would have got to meet Maui, you would have loved him probably more than I do if that is possible. I love you so much my bro, thank you for every moment and for your gifts that continue to keep giving ❤️

We will forever miss you Boze, until our souls meet again. The Mighty Ball Zee in the Place to Be! taken in Waikumete Cemetery by @dreaddieriddims
