- so basically...

last year I planned out a build with 4 xbox 360s, 4 titan v2s, 4 n100 pcs, and a bunch of other stuff.

the goal was to have a remote xbox 360 server with 4 consoles connected via LAN; where 4 ppl could connect from 4 locations around the world and play together on this private LAN setup.

I tested this build with only 2 360s, and 2 copies of each: minecraft, halo 3, and forza motorsport 2.

long story short, the latency was too high for anything other than watching a dvd or remote managing the console. ultimately, there's no reason to to lan them together for this.

I tore down the rack I built for this (hence the drawing) and all the parts are now in my spare parts box, ready for the next project when it comes along.

I might use this style set up for my xbox one so I can remote manage it. but i have a new idea inspired by this project. I want to build a vcr wall that I can use to stream movies to myself remotely. I have the blueprints, just need the vcrs and cables.

made some visual changes. fixed some bugs.

now its a 5 wave match with a final boss fight (queen xeno) at the last wave.

1st wave is creeping around the map trying to sneak up on a xeno before they sneak up on you.

as the waves progress, you'll need to move, smarter, faster, and louder as the numbers increase.

1-6 players per team co-op (local multiplayer or online) - this is the base game mode

1-6 player per team 'red vs blue' mode where 2 teams fight eachother while everyone's hunting xenos.

also added a 2-12 player free-for-all mode where you kill any enemy pilots and also fight the xenos.

tbh, my favorite part is the dark, eerie maps, and the glowing xeno blood by @dreadwerks_lab

Using Northstar to add Xenomorphs to Titanfall 2 (Prowler rework). Next step: make a game mode for them to spawn in waves.

Still buggy.

SWMRunner (on github) is a program I wrote so I could have physical media for my digital PC games. the floppy doesnt have the game on it, it just acts as a launch key.

launching with a floppy is less convenient than clicking a button, but it's also more better.

I also have cases i modified with 3d printed inserts so my floppies can sit on the shelf like the old disc versions used to.

if you're into this project, let me know and I can post more about it. by @dreadwerks_lab

When Grand Theft Auto V released, buying a game usually meant owning a game.

You went to a store.

You bought a disc.

You brought it home.

You put it on a shelf.

Ten years later, if you still had the disc and the hardware, there was a good chance you could still play it.

Nobody asked for your password.

Nobody asked you to verify a subscription.

Nobody needed to confirm that your license was still active.

The game either worked or it didn't.

There was a certain simplicity to that arrangement.

You bought the thing.

The thing became yours.

Today, many players have libraries containing hundreds of digital games.

Ask them where those games are and the answer is usually "on my account."

Not on a shelf.

Not in a drawer.

Not in a box.

On an account.

An account that requires servers.

An account that requires authentication.

An account that exists at the discretion of a company.

Digital distribution is undeniably convenient.

It is also the first time in gaming history that large numbers of people became comfortable paying for access while calling it ownership.

The Xbox 360 copy of Grand Theft Auto V sitting on a shelf does not care whether Rockstar updates it.

It does not care whether a storefront changes policy.

It does not care whether a licensing agreement expires.

If the console works and the disc works, the game works.

There is something oddly reassuring about that.

Grand Theft Auto V is old enough to remember when "I own this game" and "I can play this game" were generally assumed to mean the same thing.

When GTA V released, Discord did not exist.
If you wanted to talk to your friends while gaming, you were probably using Skype.
If you were a PC gamer, maybe TeamSpeak.
If you were on Xbox 360, you were probably sitting in an Xbox Live party chat listening to somebody's Kinect microphone echo through their TV speakers.
Streamers weren't telling people to "join the Discord."
They were telling people to follow them on Twitter.
Communities weren't organized around Discord servers.
They were organized around forums.
Actual forums.
You made an account.
You had a signature.
People argued about hardware for 200 pages.
Everybody had an avatar.
If somebody disappeared for six months, nobody knew if they quit gaming or just forgot their password.
GTA V is old enough to remember when internet communities lived on websites instead of apps.
