💢 Not every good company needs more equity

One of the most important signals from Africa’s funding market this year is not simply how much capital was raised. It is how that capital was structured.

In Q1 2026, African startups raised approximately $705 million across 59 disclosed deals. Pure equity accounted for just $212 million, while debt and hybrid instruments contributed more than $490 million. Much of this was concentrated in larger, growth-stage and asset-heavy transactions, so the takeaway is not that debt has suddenly become accessible or appropriate for every founder. It is that Africa’s capital stack is beginning to mature.

For years, venture capital became the default language of startup financing. Raise a round, announce the valuation, hire aggressively, and repeat.

But equity is not simply money. It is permanent ownership, usually accompanied by expectations of rapid growth, large outcomes and a defined exit path.

The caveat is important: debt is not cheaper equity.

Debt introduces repayment obligations, covenants, currency exposure and refinancing risk. When margins are thin or revenues are volatile, “non-dilutive capital” can quickly become existentially expensive. Hybrid instruments can also conceal complex economics behind more founder-friendly language.

So this should not become an equity-versus-debt debate.

📝 It is a question of capital architecture.

Equity absorbs uncertainty.
Debt finances predictability.
Grants de-risk innovation and public-good outcomes.
Hybrid capital fills the spaces where risk and cash generation do not fit neatly into one category.

The better question is no longer:

“Can this company raise VC?”

It is:

“What risk needs to be financed, and which form of capital is best equipped to carry it?”
