I love being a cinematographer. I love being a director. I love being on set.

The people, the problem-solving, the creativity… it’s exhilarating.

My favorite part is being able to see, in the middle of the whirlwind that can exist on set, those little moments of gold. A frame. A sound. A performance. Some element that, even in the chaos, I know is going to become something great.

But the older I get, and the longer I do this, the more I realize that some people confuse the whirlwind with the art.

They don’t feel like they’re making something unless everything feels chaotic. There’s this enduring trope of the neurotic, frantic, unfocused, “structured free spirit” artist, as though disorder itself is evidence of creativity.

It doesn’t have to be that way.

I value sets full of peace, structure, clarity, focus, and trust. A group of people working like one unified organism toward something groundbreaking.

That’s the way I want to make art. That’s the way I want to run sets.

The work can still be bold. It can still be dangerous. It can still surprise you.

But the process can be far simpler, calmer, and more intentional than people sometimes make it seem. taken in Ohio by @dreamdoorcreative

It’s been a privilege working with DBL Law on the Made It series, telling the stories of entrepreneurs and leaders helping shape Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.

These stills are from our interview with Dr. Christin Godale, Executive Director of LifeSciKY, whose work sits at the intersection of science, business, entrepreneurship, and the growing life sciences community in our region.
