📍 Chasing Cranes Since 2024 😁

Let’s see where everyone ended up 👀

These are the current locations of the cranes we’re tracking thanks to their GPS transmitters. 🛰️

Our veterans are Linnu and Luht, two of the four chicks ringed in 2024, now in their third calendar year. From that very first season, we also had Saia and Meri, who sadly didn’t make it 😔

From the 2025 group, Viidu 2 is still in Germany. I’m starting to think he’s applying for dual citizenship. 🇩🇪😅 Viidu 1 is still not sending any data… and yes, we have our theories. 🤔

Meanwhile, Victory and Tuule are on Saaremaa Island, Luht is currently in Matsalu National Park, Tiiri is in Lithuania, Roosi is in Latvia… and Linnu is also on Saaremaa, although he’s keeping a little surprise we’ll tell you about very soon 😉.

A special thought for Osson, our “TV chick”, and for one of Victory’s parents, who sadly died from avian influenza in France 😢

From here on, we’ll introduce this season’s new youngsters and keep following our veterans… 🫶🏻

Once again, thank you, Ivar, for letting me be part of this incredible project. 🩵

For the third year in a row, I’m back in Estonia during the Eurasian Crane breeding season 🐣.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll show you what fieldwork really looks like with this amazing team in Saaremaa 🫶🏼.

Expect crane chick captures, ringing, GPS tagging, science, breathtaking sunrises, mosquitoes with a master’s degree in torture, running across impossible terrain… and plenty of surprises along the way 😏.

And yes… let’s just say this wasn’t exactly my cleanest field season. You’ll find out why. 😂

And I’m afraid I still haven’t learned my lesson… 🤦🏻‍♀️

This is just the beginning….

Not sure who came up with the plan, but all three ended up in the pool at the same time 🤦🏻‍♀️

Happy ending: they all went back to whatever they were doing… preferably away from the water 🤞🏻

Our Estonian cranes are still scattering across Europe, and here’s their movement update from the last 10 days. 🗺️

The brothers Viidu 1 and Viidu 2 are still in Germany. Same country, different areas, each doing their own thing. Roosi is also still in Germany, so the German chapter remains quite active.

Overall, their movements are within expectations… most of the time 😁

Möldri, who already chose the most creative route to reach Estonia, has made a stop in Latvia 👍.

Tuule is still undecided between heading north or staying in Poland. She flew all the way to Belarus, reconsidered her life choices mid-trip, and turned back. Now she remains in Poland, like someone who leaves the house all determined… and halfway there forgets where the meeting even was 🙄

Linnu, who has been settled in Estonia for a while now, continues calmly in the western part of Saaremaa island 🫶🏼.

Luht, after literally touring Saaremaa like a curious traveler with no rush at all, returned to mainland Estonia and is now staying in Matsalu National Park.

And then there’s Victory… impossible to pin down. One day up, the next down, then reconsidering everything again. Right now she’s in northern Latvia, just a couple of wingbeats from Saaremaa… though with this crane, nothing is ever certain 🤪.

Time got away from me 🤦🏻‍♀️, not the cranes.
Here they are.

Linnu is staying loyal to his style, settled in Saaremaa, in the same western corner of the island where he first arrived.

Luht seems to have slightly overshot the mark and made it to Finland… then thought better of it and is now back on mainland Estonia.

Victory has clearly hit the accelerator 🚀 and is moving fast through northern Latvia. Not long now before crossing the Baltic and showing up in Saaremaa. Hope surprise visits are welcome… but at least now you’ve been warned.

Möldri, more original than the rest, is taking an alternative route home and is currently in Poland.

Meanwhile, Viidu 1, Viidu 2, Tuule and Roosi remain comfortably settled ⛱️ in Germany, in no particular hurry. We all know how this goes: one day they wake up inspired, spread their wings… and a couple of flaps later they’re back home.

I’m a bit like that too. One day I get a wild idea 💡 , book a fligh ✈️ and turn up wherever feels right. And you? 😏

I was driving 🚗💨, on my way, right on time. ⏰

But then… this tiny beauty 🐝💛 showed up!
I opened the window… and it decided to start a full grooming routine 🪞💅 like it was at spa 🌸

I like to think I’m a sensible person 🧠🌿but then things like this happen… and I just stand there watching enjoying it more than if it were the premiere of the year 🎬🍿💫

Because some things simply shouldn’t be interrupted ❌⏳

A bit weird… yeah 😏🌀

And well… from the outside… someone might think: “she’s worse than me” 😏💥…maybe 🙄😉

At this hour, everything is calm among our Estonian cranes 😮‍💨

Tuule is still hesitating about crossing the Pyrenees and has been hanging around the Arguedas area (Navarra) since Friday… 😴

Möldri has slowed down and is still in Italy, perhaps studying the map 🗺️ and deciding which route to take 🤔.

Linnu is already resting at home 🏡, on the island of Saaremaa. 🏝️

And the rest of the crew, scattered across Germany, with no headline-worthy moves. In fact, for the past ten days they’ve all stayed roughly in the same areas, barely moving 😎.

Although… Luht might be thinking about changing that. His GPS is starting to look a little… suspicious. We’ll be watching. 👀🛰️

But with these guys, you never know…🤷🏻‍♀️ when you least expect it, they hit the turbo and show up at your door.
Who knows….🙄

The best journeys begin when someone leaves the script 🙄… like Möldri…

Möldri’s Migration Diary 📝

It all starts in Torrefresneda (Badajoz) 🇪🇸 after a peaceful winter. He flies to an area near the Valdecañas reservoir, where he rests for a few days, and then continues to Gallocanta, a classic stop on the route of our Estonian cranes.

But here, Möldri decides to step off the script 🤦🏻‍♀️: instead of turning west toward Navarra like all the others, he heads east, crosses the Mediterranean into France, spends the night at the Étang de Berre, and the next day follows the coast to Pavia, Italy, where she rests again.

Today he has taken off once more…🫣

Now only one question remains: which countries will Möldri visit before reaching Estonia? 🤔

We’ll be watching closely… 👀

Because sometimes the most interesting routes are the ones that step outside the normal 🙄.

GPS ON. Estonian cranes update, with some bird gossip included 😉.

Moldri and Tuule are still in “do not disturb” mode in Badajoz, Extremadura. Total chill. Not a single feather has moved. 😌

Linnu is already in Poland 💪. He started with an advantage from Pina de Ebro and this is his second spring migration. Some experience, and a reasonable amount of hurry🚀.

The Viidu brothers are hanging around Germany, each in a different spot, because traveling together is overrated. Victory and Luht are also doing German tourism in different areas. 🇩🇪

For now, the whole group has hit the brakes and is taking a well-deserved break in the same general area 😎

When will they take off again? ✈️
Who will be the first to land in Saaremaa? 🕑🥇

You know how it is….they arrive when you’re not waiting for them 😏🙄
