50*50 • Oil on canvas

This painting is inspired by the life and inner strength of Anna Akhmatova.

It’s “Reminiscence” of her poetry and her life as an artist and as a person.

I was touched by her strength during the hardest period of her life, which she called her “civil death”. Even then, she continued to live, write, and hold on to her voice.
In her poetry, she did not give up.

In this work, I wanted to show her not as broken, but as someone who continues to bloom in dark times.

I was inspired by my favourite poem by Akhmatova, “The Summer Garden”:

…
Я к розам хочу, в тот единственный сад,
Где лучшая в мире стоит из оград,
Где статуи помнят меня молодой,
А я их под невскою помню водой.
…

So happy to have taken part in this exhibition with my work “Wasdraad”

This piece is inspired by my warmest feelings and nostalgia for my childhood in Ukraine and the memories connected to my grandmother.
It was really special to see it become part of this exhibition and share it with others 💓

You can still visit the exhibition tomorrow,
September 5th, from 10:00–18:00 at Stelplaats Leuven. Come take a look and discover the works of the summer residents ✨
