🎥 Why DIIFF Matters🎙️

Dreamspeakers International Indigenous Film Festival helps amplify the importance of Visual & Audible Representation for Indigenous Storytellers’ across the Globe!

Seeing oneself reflected accurately on screen promotes healthy validation and empowerment for our Indigenous audiences; particularly our youth but not exclusive to.

‘Film & Media’ representation can:

1. Inspire Future Generations: Seeing Indigenous directors, actors, and writers succeed encourages Indigenous youth to pursue careers in the arts and media, ensuring the cycle of storytelling continues.

2. Boost Self-Esteem: Combatting “symbolic annihilation” that can occur when a group is absent or misrepresented in the media.

3. Foster a Sense of Belonging: Affirming Indigenous lives and cultures are worthy of the “big screen” treatment, helping individuals feel seen, heard, and valued by the global community.

A huge Aiyhiyy to Dreamspeakers Festival Society and Rubaboo for featuring Acahkos Designs to close their 11 days Arts Festival along side Heather Bouchier Designs and Little Feather Couture!

Grateful to have given the opportunity to choose designers, MHUA & models. I was wondering if I still had the touch because it’s been so long since I’ve organized and led a crew with some help from Heather on show day. I know from last night’s showcase that we had the perfect entourage! I want to thank Jessica & Christine and their wonderful teams at Dreamspeakers & CKUA for supporting, hosting and giving us the name DEADLY Fashion Show because that was exactly what it was! Intimate, glamorous & deadly! 👊🏼✊🏼

Thank you to our arts community who came to the closing night. Your support means so much to us all..🖤

There are no words to express the depth of the devastating loss to our community, and to her family and friends. We at Dreamspeakers are in shock at the loss of a Matriarch and trailblazer in the Indigenous Film Community who was the heart and soul of it here in Edmonton and beyond.

From Samson Cree Nation, she was known for her works as a filmmaker, actor, writer and producer, such as her award-winning film, Older than America. Her other credits include, Johnny Greyeyes, Dream keeper, Blackstone, Trickster, Three Pines and Alaska Daily. She worked with those of us who present films, with funders and Industry professionals working together to make the film community strong.

Georgina was a mentor to so many of us, a shining light of what was possible when you used your voice and talents to lift others up. She shared her wisdom freely and wanted to see others succeed. She worked tirelessly to ensure our stories were told, and told with authenticity and responsibility to those who came before and those who will come after. She overcame so much in her life and she did what our old people always said to do. She brought her family and her community with her. Our deepest condolences to the Lightning family. We recognize she has left a hole in our community that will never be filled. There was only one Georgina Lightning, and her like may not come again. by @dreamspeakers
