A lot of people don't know this, but Jenny brought Desmond into our lives without telling me.

She sent me a photo of a tiny Boston Terrier, and said something along the lines of - "...don't be mad, but I did something."

She came home with him, and I was upset. We were in our early 20's, and taking on the responsibility of having a dog sounded like a lot at the time.

Little did I know he was the best thing that could have happened to us. It was our first challenge of taking care of something, overcoming highs and lows, and doing our best to give him a great life.

This was in 2011. In our first apartment together, and we weren't even married, let alone engaged.

It didn't take long for me to fall in love with this little creature, that snorted like a pig, and who's bark was bigger than himself.

Before long we had lived in 2 more apartments before setting out West and landing in Sherman Oaks, California on the other side of the country. I vividly remember having him as our co-pilot, driving from State to State, and recalling "...I bet most dogs don't get to pee in so many places!" He wasn't even 3 years old and he had the road trip of a life time.

After a short stint out West, we moved back to Maine in 2014. 5 homes in 4 years.

Duncan came into his life, and he was so mad. Rightfully so. He had us all to himself, so the idea that something even smaller than him was in his territory was the last thing he wanted.

Like me, it didn't take long for Duncan to wear Desmond down, and for 10 straight years, wherever Desmond slept, Duncan found a spot next to him.

At this point we had lived in 9 different places. 9 times we had to pack up and have our dogs readjust. Some places were smaller than others, but we always wanted Desmond to have a nice big yard where he could lay, and nice big windows where he could sun bathe. So we moved for a 10th time.

This is hard to write, but it helps knowing he got to have a full life, 14 years worth, and the ultimate gift of love from us, from his brother Duncan, to being the gentlest big brother to Penelope, and being the best surprise I ever got when Jenny brought him home that day.
