25 years. I had no idea then how much that day would change the course of my life. Eleven years later, to the day, I boarded a plane leaving Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan. A place I never should have had to know, where so many never should have lost their lives.

I’d do it all over again, and I know they would too. Not because we delight in bloodshed, but because of the love and belief we hold in the promise of this great nation that God has blessed us with. That American spirit was the strongest I’ve ever felt in the months following September 11, 2001.

How did so much change in 25 years? Where did that love of country go? With every election, every year, seemingly every day we drift further from that unity. In its place grows a tribalism that convinces people that those who believe differently are somehow less human, their lives less worthy. It’s the same mentality, ironically, that led those men to steer those planes into buildings full of innocent people.
