Welcome to Drexel University! College is one of the most exciting times of your life — full of mixed emotions, from anxiety to excitement. It is where you will make lifelong friends and make tons of new memories, and it is full of the freedom and independence you do not have in high school. However, college is packed with new responsibilities that you might not be ready for. 🐉🏫

First time in Philadelphia? Here is a full two-day itinerary to introduce you to the City of Brotherly Love and give you a glimpse of everything it has to offer. This itinerary covers a lot of ground, so feel free to pick and choose the spots that are the most exciting to you.

Day 1: Art, food, history, and parks

Day 1 will allow you to explore the city’s famous sights. Philadelphia has repeatedly been named one of the most walkable cities in the United States, and the route today will take full advantage of that.

9 a.m. | Sabrina’s Cafe | 227 N. 34th St. Start your morning at a classic Drexel University institution: Sabrina’s Cafe. This brunch place serves classic American food, and you cannot go wrong with anything on their menu.

10:30 a.m. | Philadelphia Museum of Art | 2600 Benjamin Franklin Parkway After breakfast, take a 20-minute walk over the Spring Garden Bridge to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Walk (or run) up the steps to recreate the famous scene in “Rocky,” and take in the view of the skyline.

As freshmen arrive on campus and into the Philadelphia community, it is important to explore the city’s vibrant culinary scene. However, despite the high quality of Philly’s food, dining out does not necessarily have to break the bank. Here is a short list of affordable restaurants all around Philly, full of different cuisines and styles.

Yin Ji Rice Roll

900 Cherry St.

A Chinese restaurant located in Chinatown with hand crafted rice rolls (Chang fen), a Chinese staple meal. Everything on the menu is less than $10 with a large array of congee, appetizers, and stuffed rolls, perfect for a quick bite with friends or in between popular sites.

Farina Pasta Bar

132 S. 17th St.

A hole in the wall restaurant with a build-your-own pasta option at an affordable price. The starters are reasonably priced and the complimentary garlic bread is famously delicious. There is also a section on the menu for chef favorites, and each dish is made fresh. There is often a bit of a wait, but the amazing pasta is definitely worth it, making Farina a perfect casual dinner spot in Rittenhouse.

The food trucks of Drexel University are embedded in campus culture. In week ten, students are typically cramming for their finals: life gets too busy to cook, and freshmen have eaten one too many Urban dining hall meals. Grabbing a quick warm lunch or late-night snack as convenient as right outside the library, along Food Truck Alley behind Main Building, or outside the dorm halls is essential. Whether grabbing a classic Halal meal at the Green Halal food truck across from the library from the friendly faces of Karim and Sameer, or a quick KC’s smoothie from Kim Cheng between classes, you might even say that the food trucks fuel the brains of the university.

Food is powerful. It creates an avenue for people to connect across cultures and identities. For many international students, eating a meal from food trucks like West River — the traditional Chinese food truck parked outside of the Drexel library where Mother and Son duo Sue and Boronne make their classic Tianjin style pancakes — can feel like a small connection to home. Other times, the food gives students the avenue to experience a culture’s food that is separate from their own, like Halal, a traditional Muslim cuisine, or Latin cuisine from new addition Kuku Latin Food cooked by Belkis and Ramom parked outside Bentley Hall. With so many options around campus, each student can choose their staple food truck that always hits just right. In a student’s time studying at Drexel, these meals may eventually become so familiar that they taste like home. But the story of success for these businesses goes far beyond the food on the plate.

Welcome to the City of Brotherly Love! Among its many attractions, Philadelphia is home to arguably the most passionate and dedicated group of sports fans in the country. Whether you enjoy the excitement of a long home run or the chaos of a Sunday afternoon at Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia has something for you. Becoming a Philly sports fan is about more than simply picking a team, however. For anyone new to the city, here is what you need to know to become a true Philadelphia sports fan.

Football — Eagles

Football is where most of the attention surrounding sports goes. After reaching the Super Bowl twice in the past four seasons, the Eagles have given Drexel students a front-row seat to some of the biggest moments in Philadelphia sports. Following their most recent Super Bowl victory in 2025, students had the rare opportunity to celebrate on campus before joining millions of fans for the parade down Broad Street just days later. The team’s biggest stars include Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley, Lane Johnson, and Zack Baun, just to name a few. And if there is one phrase every new Drexel student should learn, it is simple: “Go Birds.”

Be mindful of your space

As an incoming freshman, living in a dorm may be your first time sharing a space with someone who is not family, so as you enter this next chapter, know that it is important to set rules with your roommate. Whether you live in a traditional, hybrid, or apartment-style dorm, setting rules for how you and your roommate will navigate a small space is important.

Talk to your roommates about sleep schedules, cleaning, how often they plan to go out, and whether they plan to bring a friend to the dorm. Setting these rules now can ease your relationship with your roommate, and even allow you to get closer as the year goes on. However, keep in mind that the space you are sharing is not just yours; it is a shared space.
