As I walk across the stage today for the final time in my academic career as a student, I am filled with indescribable joy for how far I’ve come. Pursuing a Ph.D. degree in Family Therapy has been one of the most mentally, emotionally, and intellectually challenging endeavours that I’ve ever embarked on and if I can be completely honest, its tested every ounce of my entire being. However, this journey has taught me a great deal about life and how much we can accomplish when we’re crazy enough to believe that we can. So many have walked alongside me throughout this process and I can’t thank you enough for your unwavering and continuous support. Above all, God gets ALL the glory for this and I’m filled with gratitude for where he’s brought me to and from. I’m excited and can’t wait to continue the work that he’s purposed me to do.

Dr. Franchesca Fontus, Ph.D., LMFT has arrived!!! 🎓✨

Some accomplishments happen quietly.

Today I learned that a research article I co-authored has now been cited 15 times by other researchers.

We published this work in 2018, during a time when conversations about race, equity, and the experiences of therapists of color were becoming impossible to ignore. Just a couple of years later, the world would face a pandemic that reshaped mental health in ways none of us could have predicted.

Looking back, I’m humbled that this work continues to contribute to those conversations years later.

Research has a unique way of living beyond the moment it was written. Long after the headlines fade, the dialogue continues—through classrooms, clinicians, and researchers committed to building on the work that came before them.

I’m grateful to my co-authors, my mentors, and everyone who continues advancing the field.

Research. Practice. Teaching. Community.

This is why I do what I do.

❤️

Academic citations are different from likes or shares. Before a research article is ever published, it undergoes a rigorous peer-review process where experts in the field evaluate its quality, methodology, and contribution. Every citation means another researcher found the work valuable enough to build upon. Fifteen citations represent fifteen contributions to the ongoing scientific conversation.

Use your voice. It matters. You never know what seeds you are planting for the future.

Our abstract! 🎉

Choose friends that feel like family, friends who share your goals and ambition, who care about the community just as much as you do 💫

Last month I presented at the National Council on Family Relations @ncfrorg annual conference for the first time and it was an amazing experience. It felt great re-visiting my dissertation work, and getting back into Family Systems research.

It was especially sweet, sharing in these moments with my doc sisters Alicia and Paulette (who absolutely killed their presentations) and getting to connect with many of my faculty colleagues and students. I also really appreciated the free professional headshots available for attendees (I was due for a new one, lol).

I left NCFR feeling full, inspired, and excited to continue contributing to scholarship in ways that feel both personal and purposeful. To God be the glory, I am looking forward to 2026! taken in Baltimore, Maryland by @drfranchescafontus

Last Sunday, I had the pleasure of serving as a guest speaker and panel moderator for @theturnchurch’s first mental health event.

If you know me or understand the passion that I have for my work as a therapist, you know I have a special place in my heart for highlighting the importance of mental health & wellness within the body of Christ.

It was truly an honor to share my expertise. Our panelists engaged in raw and honest discussions on faith, mental health, relationships, family dynamics, and more.

It was an impactful time and God was truly glorified. Thank you so much to @theturnchurch for having me! by @drfranchescafontus
