HEBBEX D'EXPECTATIO EXPECTATA
Hebbex D'expectatio Expectata is a Norwegian experimental music trio based in Stavanger. The group is an evolution of a long-standing duo consisting of Kjetil Brandsdal and Thore Warland. The project expanded into its current trio format with the addition of vocalist Helge Thornes and it showcases their blend of found music, polyrhythms and vocals – lyrical themes drawing from the unfinished novels of Aubrey Beardsley, Roman tragedies, and Norwegian journalism.

Chain DLK reviews "Kva er Vald"
Grazie Vito Camarretta

Some bands sound as though they spent years perfecting a shared musical vocabulary. Hebbex D'expectatio Expectata sound as though they wandered into the same room carrying completely different dictionaries, spilled them onto the floor, and somehow emerged with a language that shouldn't exist but stubbornly insists on making sense. It is messy, witty, occasionally bewildering, and far more coherent than first impressions suggest.

"Kva er Vald" (meaning "What is violence"), the Stavanger trio's debut, arrives with enough eccentric credentials to make any publicist's job suspiciously easy. Kjetil Brandsdal, one of Norway's defining figures in experimental noise through projects such as Noxagt, Ultralyd and No Balls, joins forces with the relentlessly inventive drummer Thore Warland, whose résumé stretches across some of the country's most uncompromising ensembles. Completing the triangle is Helge Thornes, whose career reads less like a biography than an elaborate practical joke: psychobilly singer, proto-jungle producer, Jamaican sound system devotee, dancehall collaborator with Mr. Vegas, translator of Joe Orton, and novelist. Predicting what such a combination might produce would have been impossible. Predicting it would sound ordinary would have been absurd.

The trio evolved from the long-running partnership between Brandsdal and Warland, but Thornes fundamentally alters the chemistry. His voice refuses to function as a conventional frontman presence. Sometimes he declaims, sometimes narrates, sometimes appears to be delivering fragments recovered from an imaginary radio broadcast drifting between stations. The lyrics draw upon sources as disparate as Aubrey Beardsley's unfinished fiction, Roman tragedy and Norwegian journalism, yet they rarely announce those references explicitly. Instead, language becomes another unstable object inside the mix, carrying rhythm and texture as much as narrative.

Recensione dall'Italia, New Noise Magazine

Baptized with a name that sounds like it came straight out of a magic grimoire, the new incarnation of Kjetil Brandsdal and Thiene Warland brings vocalist Helge Thornes on board for a truly irresistible record. To begin with, the trio behind *Hebbex D’Expectatio Expectata* draws on backgrounds in noise, psychobilly, dancehall, experimental music, and funk; *Kva Er Vald* seems to literally bridge these worlds. There are theatrical and rock-infused gestures, tape loops and atmospheric soundscapes, and explicit literary inspirations—such as Aubrey Beardsley. Eight tracks that could be described as a sound system cycling through Pere Ubu, Skull Defekts, and Bill Nace? Sure, but those are just rough sketches trying to define a trio with incredible expressive power; thanks to the addition of vocals, they can do anything, all while crafting actual songs. Indeed, that is the only fitting term for these magic spells—these bizarre tales floating atop rhythms that have been steeped, pilfered, and fused into new forms. Add to this the fact that Helge delivers his delirious musings in Latin, English, and Norwegian, perfectly tying the project together as a blend of the three musicians' styles. Their technique is heavily influenced by the Jamaican dubplate scene, yet the source material incorporates experimental—and at times noise—sounds that carve out new paths. Admittedly, a record like this might struggle to break through to diverse listener demographics, but I firmly believe that simply listening—and trusting enough to let yourself fall into it—is all it takes. It is a shame that no Italian dates have been announced for their tour so far, though festival slots remain open; in a setting like Zuma, for instance, they would be absolutely unmissable. We highly recommend it—and keep our fingers crossed; you never know. taken in Roma, Italia by @dridmachine
