This album is a document of RED NOVA, Hawai‘i’s celebrated free-jazz ensemble, capturing an enduring period of musical exploration during the group’s artist residency at @theboxjelly in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Tucked discreetly into the heart of the city, Box Jelly was far more than a physical space. Founded and envisioned by Hawaii culturalist and creative catalyst @rechung together with his colleague and collaborator @aralaylo, Box Jelly became a potent incubator for an extraordinary concentration of creative energy. Its sophisticated industrial-loft environment fostered a culture of continual collaboration among artists, musicians, entrepreneurs, innovators, and cultural provocateurs— bringing together some of Honolulu’s most adventurous talent with creative voices from far beyond Hawai‘i.

In 2024, RED NOVA became an extended resident presence within those walls, transforming the space into a laboratory for spontaneous composition, performance, recording, and cross-disciplinary exchange. During this period, the group presented a succession of events and collaborations of varying scale, bringing together musicians, artists, and cultural voices from Hawai‘i and around the world. Among them were acclaimed West Coast saxophonist @steve.tres, the @galliardsq, and celebrated composer and pianist @billychildspiano. RED NOVA also welcomed the formidable New York bassist and improviser @littlehueymusic and cultural producer Patricia Nicholson, whose presence further expanded the possibilities of the space.

And threading through much of this activity was @trycoffeehi, the beloved establishment operating within Box Jelly, whose presence supplied not only caffeine but another essential ingredient of the Box Jelly atmosphere: community.

Though Box Jelly ceased to exist in 2026, it left an outsized imprint on Honolulu’s artistic and cultural landscape. These recordings capture that pursuit at a particularly fertile moment in the group’s continuing evolution: restless, intuitive and unpredictable.

Red Nova and the Young Poets is a meeting point for words that arrive before they’re written, carried across oceans and into the studio: an anthology of spoken word set to spontaneous, live improvisation, where every track is a single collective performance— poet and musician breathing the same air, forging the collective work together in real time.
At the heart of this collection are the young voices of two UNESCO Cities of Literature. In Odesa, Ukraine, children are writing and living their poems simultaneously — verses composed under the shadow of a war they did not choose, testaments to a resilience that refuses to be silenced. Across the world, in Okayama, a sister City of Literature in Japan, other children write from a different kind of front line: lives shaped by abuse, displacement, and the walls of orphanages, working through trauma one line at a time. Some of these young poets confront their circumstances directly. Others simply reach for beauty, unprompted and unbroken.

Together, their words form a single testament to what remains indomitable in a child’s spirit— proof that the impulse to create outlasts whatever attempts to extinguish it. by @drift_jazz

Last month we performed at @jazzbarkiri in Ginza, Tokyo, and at @bluenotehawaii. We’re now looking forward to our debut in Kaimuki at The Curb!!!

In December 2022, three seasoned musicians—Peter Shaindlin on trumpet, Randy Wong on double bass, and Jay Jaskot on percussion—came together for a spontaneous free jazz recording session in Honolulu. What unfolded was so powerfully unique and so deeply connective that the trio immediately knew they had tapped into something truly meaningful. From that moment, Red Nova was formed—not as a ‘traditional’ jazz group, but as an evolving experiment in musical telepathy, spontaneity, and fearless creativity.

In a place where free and experimental jazz is still nascent, Red Nova has emerged as a pioneering force across Hawai‘i and the Pacific. With no written charts, no rehearsed melodies, and nothing pre-planned, Red Nova performs and records music that is entirely improvised—crafted live and of the moment.
