My dream chainstitch machine!!!! This late 1800’s/early 1900’s era Cornely A has been the machine I’ve been in search of since I first started this whirlwind of a journey. I’m so excited to finally own such an incredible piece of history.

For the history lovers:
In 1863, silk machine engineer Antoine Bonnaz developed the first successful chainstitch embroidery machine, patenting the technology in 1865. Soon after, Bonnaz sold the patent, and in 1868, French inventor Ercole Cornely acquired it. Cornely refined the design in Paris into what would become one of the most influential embroidery machines ever built. Many of these early machines earned awards at the Paris Expositions Universelles of 1889 and 1900.

The machines were so successful that they quickly spread from northern France to St. Gallen, Switzerland, the embroidery capital of the world at the time. From there, Cornely machines were exported across Europe and eventually around the globe.

In 1911, the Singer Manufacturing Company introduced its own version of the Cornely: the Singer 114W103. Hugely popular in the United States, the Singer 114, alongside the original Cornely machines, is one of the most commonly seen machines among us chainstitchers. Many other manufacturers later produced their own versions as well. For example, my white Consew 104 is a close copy of the Singer, produced much more recently.

Today, nearly 160 years later, one of those machines has somehow found its way to me. This French Cornely A is still capable of creating embroidery exactly as it did when it first left Paris.

I can only imagine the stories this machine could tell of the generations of chainstitchers who spent countless hours creating with it.

Back in July when I chainstitched at Cheyenne Frontier Days, I got to meet the coolest gal ever @ol.tuff.puss! She had an idea to get her nickname on a jumpsuit she had and that turned into doing a whole Wyoming theme. Complete with a bison, her favorite wildflowers (indian paintbrush), The Tetons, and of course I had to add a rainbow trout and fly.

So excited to see how it turned out, and definitely hard to give this one back😂🤪.
