There is an irritating reality about Iceland. You set out with a plan, Point A to Point B, mapped out with clinical precision, and within forty miles, the landscape makes a mockery of your itinerary.

In 2021, Ray and I spent ten days chasing a ghost of a plan across 2,000 miles of gravel and basalt. We started as wide-eyed pilgrims, stopping for every trickle of water falling off a cliff. But Iceland wears you down with its own perfection. By day six, we were actually saying, ā€œLet’s skip that oneā€ passing up cascades that would be the crown jewel of any other country on Earth just because we were tired.

Then we stumbled into Goưafoss.

The ā€œWaterfall of the Gods.ā€ Legend says a lawspeaker tossed his Norse idols into these churning depths to signal a new age. Standing there in the July heat, engulfed by swarms of black flies and the roar of the Skjálfandafljót river, you realize the itinerary doesn’t matter. In the most cliché of phrases, it’s truly about the journey.

It was worth every bite, every mile, and every fly.

There’s a raw, indifferent power to Skógafoss that doesn’t care if you’re there to see it or not. Standing at the base, you aren’t just looking at a waterfall; you’re standing in the path of 60 meters of relentless, thundering gravity.
It’s overwhelming. It’s loud. And if you get close enough to feel its breath, you’re going to get soaked.

I took the drone up to capture that scale, using a 28x zoom to keep my distance while getting tight on the texture of the spring. (Friendly reminder: I’m a certified pilot and had full authorization to fly here using guidance; Iceland’s beauty deserves that respect).

Whether you’re fighting the spray at the bottom or gasping for air at the top of those 527 steps, Skógafoss reminds you exactly how small you are. And honestly? That’s the best part of being here.

I realized I’ve been posting snapshots of a life here without ever really introducing myself, I’m Reno.

My story starts in the salt and heat of Rincón, Puerto Rico. I’m the son of two surfers who ran a guest house and restaurant originally called Sandy Beach Surf Club (changed to inn years later). They were advocates for the environment and social justice, something that stuck with me and shaped a lot of my choices later on.

I grew up in the chaos of hospitality but somehow took a hard left into academia, earning a Master’s in DNA computing, thanks in part to my dad handing me my first computer at age seven to help manage guesthouse reservations.

But hospitality has a way of pulling you back. Think Michael Corleone: ā€œJust when I thought I was out, they pull me back inā€¦ā€ I bartended and served my way through college in Rincón at spots like Tamboo (voted one of the best bars in America), and seasonally in Rehoboth Beach, where I eventually landed full-time in 2012.

I cut my teeth at the Back Porch Café and Nage (before it became Fork&Flask and later La Vida Hospitality), and worked under the late Matt Haley at SoDel Concepts. I learned that hospitality isn’t just about food, it’s about taking care of people.

After a short stint in R&D in the defense sector, I took that ethos to the skies, joining the airline industry in 2013 and finding a new calling in union advocacy. Standing up for the workforce became second nature.

Today, I split my time between the jumpseat and my own company, DRI Media, where I skip the corporate fluff to do design and marketing for small, underserved businesses, because everyone deserves a voice, not just the ones with big budgets.

And when the work is done? I’m a proud nerd. You’ll find me in costume at a Renn Faire, the gym, a concert with my best friend or traveling with a camera in one hand and a fork in the other, always chasing the next great meal, view, or adventure. Or at home, on the couch, with my two cats.

One of the best things about living at the Delaware beaches is getting to enjoy experiences like this right in our own backyard!

This week, we had the pleasure of heading out on a sunset cruise aboard the Sand Dollar with our marketing guy, Reno of DRIMedia, who also happens to handle marketing for Sand Dollar Cruises!

What an awesome evening! The weather couldn’t have been better, Captain Don was fantastic, and the cruise took us across Rehoboth Bay and into the canal, with beautiful waterfront views along the way. And just look at that sunset!

Whether you’re visiting the Delaware beaches for the first time or you’ve lived here for years, this is such a wonderful way to experience our coastline from a different perspective. We highly recommend it!

Sand Dollar Cruises departs from the dock directly behind the Rusty Rudder at 113 Dickinson Street in Dewey Beach. They offer sightseeing and sunset cruises, as well as private charters perfect for birthdays, celebrations, or simply enjoying an evening on the water with friends and family.

Learn more at www.sanddollarcruises.com

And a special thanks to Reno at DRIMedia for capturing these beautiful photos!

Icelandic horses in their beautiful winter landscape. One of my favorite sights.

Despite Iceland’s harsh climate, they are remarkably well adapted to the cold. Their thick, double-layered winter coats provide insulation against freezing temperatures, allowing them to spend much of the winter outdoors.

A beautiful sight against Iceland’s incredible landscape.

āš ļø Reynisfjara is breathtaking, but its waves can be deadly.

I’m resharing this video captured this week by Icelandic guide Heiưrún Hauksdóttir. A powerful wave caught visitors, including two children, on the black sand beach. Thankfully, everyone escaped unharmed.

In August 2025, a 9-year-old girl died here after being swept into the sea. Sneaker waves strike without warning. Keep your distance, watch the ocean, and NEVER ignore the warning signs.

I rebuilt my deck just over 2 years ago. I spent tens of thousands to built a completely custom back porch and a wrap around deck but between life getting really hectic, family needing me, and two of the most arduous years of my life, the deck sat unfinished and became a catchall for miscellaneous junk. I completely remodeled the inside of my house and still the deck sat unfinished… until today.

Stay tuned for the finishing touches.

Hidden in Iceland’s remote Westfjords, Dynjandi is one of the country’s most spectacular waterfalls—and absolutely worth the detour.

Its name translates to ā€œthe thunderous one,ā€ and it’s easy to understand why. Water cascades approximately 100 meters (328 feet) down a massive, fan-shaped rock face, creating a breathtaking natural spectacle.

Unlike many of Iceland’s more famous waterfalls, reaching Dynjandi takes you through the rugged, less-traveled landscapes of the Westfjords.

Location: Arnarfjörður, along Route 60

Hike: About 15 minutes uphill, passing several smaller waterfalls along the way.

Travel Tip: Allow at least 45–60 minutes to explore and take photos. Wear shoes with good traction, as portions of the trail are rocky and slippery.

Good to Know: Parking is paid, and mountain roads can be challenging outside summer. Always check road.is before heading out.

If you’re planning an Iceland road trip, don’t overlook the Westfjords. Some of the country’s most incredible scenery is waiting beyond the usual tourist routes.

Along a remote stretch of Iceland’s Westfjords coastline rests Garưar BA 64, considered the oldest steel ship in Iceland and one of the country’s most unusual historical landmarks.

Built in Norway in 1912(the same year as the Titanic), the vessel originally operated as a whaling ship before joining Iceland’s fishing fleet during World War II. Renamed Garưar BA 64 in 1963, it continued working until 1981, when it was declared unsafe and deliberately beached in Skápadalur.

More than four decades later, its rusting hull remains a reminder of Iceland’s maritime and fishing heritage, surrounded by dramatic mountains and the waters of Patreksfjörưur.

šŸ“ Location: Road 612 in the southern Westfjords, approximately 10.6 miles (17.1 km) from the village of Patreksfjörưur.

Other incredible places to explore nearby:

Rauưisandur Beach: A spectacular stretch of reddish-golden sand, unusual in a country famous for its black volcanic beaches. Great for coastal photography and occasional seal sightings.

Látrabjarg Cliffs: Towering up to 441 meters (1,447 feet), these are among Europe’s largest seabird cliffs. They’re particularly famous for puffins during the late spring and summer breeding season.

Travel tip: Road 612 includes gravel sections, and weather can make access challenging, especially outside summer. Check road conditions before heading out, and admire the deteriorating ship from a safe distance.

The Westfjords are one of Iceland’s most remarkable regions for travelers looking to venture beyond the usual tourist routes.

121 Members of Congress are standing up for Spirit workers and our right to privacy!

This is a HUGE development in the ongoing Spirit Airlines bankruptcy proceedings.

@afacwa announced that 121 Members of Congress, led by Senator Elizabeth Warren and Representative Steven Horsford, have signed a letter raising serious concerns about the proposed sale of Spirit workers’ data to Google.

For months, AFA has been fighting to ensure that our personal information is protected throughout the bankruptcy process, particularly as questions surrounding artificial intelligence, data ownership, and the potential use of employee information for AI training continue to grow.

This isn’t just about former Spirit employees. The outcome could set a precedent for how workers’ personal information is handled in future bankruptcies and corporate transactions across the country.

A tremendous thank you to AFA-CWA, President Sara Nelson (@flyingwithsara), and everyone who has worked tirelessly behind the scenes to bring national attention to this issue. Getting 121 lawmakers involved is no small accomplishment, and it demonstrates just how important this fight has become.

Our airline may have ceased operations, but our rights and our privacy didn’t disappear with it.

I’ll continue following the court proceedings and sharing updates as we approach the next hearing on October 14.

Please share this update with your fellow Spirit Bees and other aviation colleagues. This issue affects far more than just our airline.
