What are carvings of ginseng roots doing on the Buddhist Jing’an Temple in Shanghai, China?

Carvings of ginseng roots on a 13th-century Buddhist temple like Jing’an Temple may seem surprising at first, but they make cultural and symbolic sense within the context of Chinese Buddhism, which has always absorbed and reflected elements of local beliefs, especially those from Daoism and traditional Chinese medicine

1. Ginseng as a Symbol of Vital Energy (Qi):
Ginseng (人参 rénshēn) is one of the most prized medicinal herbs in Traditional Chinese Medicine, believed to restore vitality, longevity, and spiritual balance. These qualities align closely with Buddhist themes of enlightenment, life force (prāṇa), and spiritual cultivation.

2. Buddhist-Daoist Syncretism:
Chinese temples, even those officially Buddhist, often incorporate Daoist iconography. Daoism places strong emphasis on health, immortality, and harmony with nature—all ideas compatible with ginseng. Jing’an Temple, like many historic temples in China, reflects a fusion of religious and folk traditions.

3. Auspicious Imagery:
Ginseng, along with the Ruyi and the character 寿 (shòu, longevity), forms part of a broader visual language of auspicious symbols. These carvings were likely added or restored during later renovations (especially in the Qing Dynasty), blending Buddhist purpose with folk blessings for health, happiness, and longevity.
