Like all other agricultural products, green (unroasted) coffee has a shelf life from a quality standpoint. That’s why every pound of our green coffee inventory is frozen fresh at its peak.

This preservation strategy supports our sourcing philosophy, roasting style, and standard of quality consistency. In addition, it also affords us unique and exciting opportunities for menu curation. Freezing coffee makes it possible for us to offer a consistently fresh and perennial Foundational Menu while sharing an expansive and evolving selection of Reserve and Education Lots, as well as Archival Releases, representing both recent arrivals and notable past harvests. Essentially, the freezer allows us to lock away memorable coffee experiences that would otherwise be lost to time forever. by @drinkpassenger

Leading up to the launch of our newest Foundational Partnership, our team got together to cup the coffees from Thamani, learn more about the producers who are part of this incredible group, and talk about why Foundational Partnerships are a core part of Passenger's approach. 🤝

➡️ At an early stage in our evolution as a coffee roasting company, our green buying team decided to try to add value for our core producer partners by focusing more of our coffee buying budget in less places over time. For the past five years and counting, the vast majority of our annual buying has been focused on seven producers in East Africa, Central America, South America, and South Asia that we refer to collectively as the Foundational Partnerships. by @drinkpassenger

As we celebrate the launch of Thamani, we’re excited to share a conversation between Evan, our Director of Sourcing and Producer Partnerships, and Peter Mbature of Kamavindi Coffee Lab.

Peter and his family produce outstanding coffee at Kamavindi Estate, a farm that their family has owned and operated for three generations. While our team has never lacked enthusiasm for beautiful Kenyan coffees, we didn’t seriously consider the idea of a Foundational Partnership in Kenya until we met Peter. Thamani simply would not exist without him and his family, and there is so much to be explored with them in the coming years.
