THAT’S WHAT I’M F**KIN’ TALKING ABOUT!

We are FINALLY back in action in my own BRZ for @socal86cup and we took home a W!

Between basically doing a whole suspension overhaul and battling a very temperamental misfire that only seemed to show itself right before a track day, this car was finally given the A-ok to full send at Laguna Seca.

Slapped on some fresh @maxxistires VR2s for 86Cup Street class, and some new (to me anyway) @csgspec C2 pads up front and came home with the top podium spot for my class. It came down to the very last competition session to lay it all on the line. Despite being rusty driving my own car and having never driven on fresh fresh VR2s on track, I managed to smash through my last personal best on 200tw tires at this track.

I couldn’t be prouder of myself but also the folks who put up with my nonsense the past few months trying to finally bring this car out. They say you never know when the next one will come so I’m enjoying this for now.

Special thanks to @z_tuner_guy @counterspacegarage for splitting hairs in my (probably terabytes at this point) of datalogs to see if we could finally pinpoint the misfire issue and also helping me order a very specific ECU harness for my car. An issue which only someone like Zach would figure out, if at all.

@westendalignment for setting me up with a really dialed in alignment and ride height setup for my new coilovers. It drove like a dream at Laguna!

Also special thanks to @petrol.sport @gold_membr for parts install help, also @swiss_army_hatchback and @downshiftxlr8 for egging me on the most out of everyone to get this car back to glory.

And with that, I take a 3 month break from tracking (I hope)!

I knew this day would come at some point and I’m glad it’s finally here!

Eventually outgrowing the stock brake components on my BRZ and even the CSG Spec Tein Flex As, as I wanted my build to be even more competitive for the likes of @socal86cup , probably more Gridlife adventures at some point and beyond!!

@counterspacegarage did most of the guessing work for me admittedly so I can’t take credit here even in the slightest. Nonetheless I’m happy with the upgrade path chosen for me. We’re turning the daily into a racecar just ever so slightly more now.

They got Brembo to special custom paint a Brembo BM4 4-piston front caliper and GT 2-piston rear caliper in STi pink just for me and my build. It’s hard to see on camera without some decent editing but in-person just trust. I’ve always had a fondness for that color and what better way to incorporate it on the BRZ?!

My OEM Brembos certainly had gotten their fair usage of daily and track abuse. Maybe one day I’ll show how beat up they are after several track seasons and how rebuilding them goes but for now we play with the shiny new toys.

The second portion of this build was a new coilover setup. @hks_usa_inc Hipermax R coilovers for the BRZ. I’ve actually been running these for a while now, at least since May and won the first 86Cup event I ran on these back at Laguna. What a way to break them in!

Admittedly it wasn’t until my most recent track day where I finally found the truly dialed in settings I’d been longing for so I was a bit 50/50 on whether I’d keep the setup or not (and post about it here). Do I give up some street comfort? Yeah, but #becauseracecar . I think now that I’m a bit more acquainted, it’s time to tackle the timesheets more wherever my next adventures may be.

Some long nights were in store for all of this but it seems to definitely be well worth it.

Of course, with the Brembo calipers came my “per usual” spec of some @csgspec pad compounds which I’ll talk about soon enough.

I’d like to thank @gold_membr and @petrol.sport for egging me on to ruin the daily and well, I guess we’re here now 🤣🫡

Well I definitely didn’t intend to finish my Quagsire cameo TCG art master set but the one and only @cardlabtcg came through with the final JP exclusive that I needed! Definitely unexpected but I’m glad that they were the one to have it randomly.

Now I can worry about how I’m going to obtain a CoroCoro Mew or a Festa Pikachu when I’m in Japan next year.

Finally when people ask if I collect Quagsire because I collect Wooper too, I can show them this. Next up, Clodsire, but I quite literally just need one card 🤣

What should I collect next Pokemon-wise? I want to finish Wooper in Japanese as well as the Chinese exclusive foils/stamps. I also just need one card for my Crown Zenith Galarian Gallery but aside from that I’m kind of an orphan now for Pokemon collecting. You let me know what to do next! by @driventoadam

Man, I can’t believe it’s already 86 Day again. I feel like I just got done celebrating last year’s “holiday”.

Anyway, happy 86 Day! There’s nothing much left to say about this car and platform that I haven’t already said in years past. Just yesterday, I passed 109k miles and you all know just how much I abuse my car. I always do, but I’d like to give my flowers to @counterspacegarage for supporting my car since Day 1. I don’t think it would’ve lasted this long without them providing high quality recommendations and parts to the build over time.

This chassis has taken me to so many places and met so many new faces it’s absolutely wild to look back on.

Nowadays I’m thankful to have a GR86 at my disposal to hoon around on track which has been an additional crazy experience to my BRZ ownership. Mainly learning how aero works for the bulk of it. It’s been fun, though I realize I need to eventually sub-2 in one of my cars, hopefully soon!

At this point I’m starting to think I must be decent high up there in the standings in regard to the amount of seat hours I have in a FR-S/BRZ/86/GR86. I must be matching some of the original engineers that tested this car way back when.

Anyway, I hope wherever you are with your AE86 or FT86/GR86/whatever you wanna call it, you’re having fun with it with fellow owners.

Went to Night School @race.service this past Tuesday! It’s not often in LA we get treated to actual motorsports stuff (outside of the Long Beach Grand Prix and Petersen) let alone NASCAR.

RS hosted a night with @svg97 and @connorzilisch talking about their past and upbringing in what is otherwise an unconventional path to the NASCAR Cup Series. I’ve been following Connor since his MX-5 Cup days and SVG since Supercars so it was nice to hear them talk about it firsthand in-person.

Afterwards I got to meet both, and have them sign some of my trading cards I had of them. Also got to hear @jimmiejohnson talk about Auto Club Speedway and other potential for SoCal motorsports (I sadly forgot to grab a photo with him). Then right before I left got to meet and talk with the absolute legend @tommykendall11 . The Trans-Am series from the 90s is probably one of my favorite eras in motorsports ever so it was cool to shake his hand and get a photo.

All in all, great night. Thank you @race.service ! I don’t get to come out to stuff like this since RS is on the other side of the planet for me basically but this was one to not miss for sure!

Been a minute since I’ve done a TBT so I’m throwing it back this Thursday to Gridlife Laguna 2024. Marvelous photos by @nycska 📸

I feel like I always throwback to this event but it was just such a monumental moment in my driving experience that I always look back on it fondly, even if the results didn’t show on paper. So many (helpful) friends made and one of the few times I actually camped at a track (I don’t think my back has ever recovered lol). I’d like to thank @counterspacegarage for supporting me despite me being in over my head. At least the parts that made up my car were the least of my worries.

With 86Cup headed to Laguna at the end of this month, I’m hopeful I can get the car refreshed enough to better my times now that I’ve grown as a driver and have a better understanding of 200tw tires. Fender liners flying out are the least of my worries at the moment in 2026 compared to this date in 2024.

The mission for 2026 is to earn at least a W somewhere for my personal car, even if it means having it up completely running, maintenance refreshed and whatever else comes with owning a BRZ that has seen 105k miles of track abuse, canyon runs, roadtrips to NorCal/Texas and daily driving in between.

86Cupchella anyone? End results of party time in Vegas with the community. We seem to be collecting these like infinity stones… 🔷🔶

Always a bridesmaid, never a bride. But that’s okay, there’s more to this than just the accolades, I’m in it for the driver development.

Getting a bit more comfortable in this car and therefore more bettererer

Traffic was absolutely brutal all day in Orange group. It was basically wheel to wheel the entire time for me it seemed. It is what it is. I did end up doing 2:03.435 at the end of it all even though I was “dicking around” in the bonus session.

Not many folks can give ridealongs/advice, do photography, organize a time trial series, attempt to diagnose a fellow competitors’ issue with an unknown tuning software for an ECU you have no experience with and still manage to lock in a decent time. I’m sure if I didn’t do all that I could be faster but again, I’m not in it for awards. Like they said in the show Loki, “I got a drawer full of these”

Nonetheless thankful to all my friends in @socal86cup and @counterspacegarage for letting me chase that metaphorical rabbit in the @csgspec GR86.

I know what you’re all wondering. We’ll go over this last second audible soon.
