Attended my first ever drift show recently. It was exhilarating to get away from the endless sea of hybrid and electric commuting appliances of everyday and indulge in tire-shredding, fossil fuel guzzling, burnt-clutch smelling mechanical monsters. This is expression. This is car culture. And I pray it never goes away.

There’s just something about Italian car design. The lines exude passion, the colors, the wings, the drama…. Case in point: This new Maserati GT2 Stradale that I got a chance to explore at the recent NY Autoshow. A track-focused variant of the MC20, this thing is a striking fusion of beauty and aggression… love it.

How important is the sound a car makes? The EV collective will insist it’s not particularly important and that actual cold, hard performance and metrics is the real filet mignon.
Maybe they’re right, maybe they’re wrong, but in a world where engines are downsizing, electrification is spreading and cars are just overall getting quieter, I think it’s worth pausing for a moment and having a listen to this video, where the SVJ is politely singing the songs of its big-engined, fuel-burning brethren.
For me, car isn’t just a tool to go from A to B. It’s an expression of one’s self, a way to show the world (and mostly importantly yourself) who you are. I love a good sounding car. A deep rhythmic rumble of a pushrod V8, the howl of a boosted 6, the shrill scream of a V10 or the soul-stirring roar of a majestic V12. Listen to this and in the days of change that are surely pending… remember. #cars #carsounds #v12 #supercar #ev #ice #lamborghini #italian #changingworld #power #enthusiast #caranddriver #launch #launchcontrol by @driver.diaries

Back in 1987, the Ferrari F40 became the first production road car to exceed the mythical 200-mph barrier with a top speed of 201 mph. It was an incredible milestone in speed and set a new standard that other super and hyper cars had to live up to. Fast forward 36 years, countless innovations in technology and aerodynamics and we now have another conquered milestone- 300mph. Enter the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+. Sporting the same carbon finish as the record-setting prototype car driven by Andy Wallace, this Chiron SS 300+ packs a quad-Turbo W16 with 1578bhp and an equally eye-opening price tag of $3.9 Million. Oh, and of course all 30 examples are already sold out. #bugatti #chironsupersport #chiron #w16 #300 #hypercar by @driver.diaries

Competition breeds greatness. For the last few years, Honda and Renault have been battling each other for the crown of the quickest front-wheel-drive car around the legendary Nurburgring Nordschleife track in Germany. Up until March of this year, Renault had it with their fierce Megane Trophy-R with a 7:45.39 time, but then then the latest gen (FL5) Civic Type R arrived to steal back the title belt with a 7:44.881 around the longest 20.832km layout of the Nordschleife. In a street spec, front wheel drive manual car, not bad.
However what’s even more impressive is that if we extract the pre-2019 track layout time used by older cars, which in this case would be 7:39.54s, the Civic actually beats some pretty exotic machinery from yesteryear.
The 2005 Bugatti Veyron 16.4 for instance, which was the quickest car in its day in a straight line, managed a 7:40.
Lamborghini Murcielaho LP640 from 2007? 7:40.
Mercedes SLS AMG Electric did a 7:56
2010 Pagani Zonda S 7.3- 7:44.
2007 Porsche 911 GT3- 7:42

Yes they are all older and tech moves on, but there’s no denying it’s pretty cool to see a compact front-wheel-driver with a traditional manual transmission mixing it with the big hitters of the past. Now let’s wait for Renault or Volkswagen to beat the time so Honda can make this thing even quicker. #competitionbreedsexcellence #honda #civictyper #savethemanuals #nurburgring #laprecord #performancecar #vtec #sixspeed #brembo by @driver.diaries

GLA250. This is one of those cars that will sell well and doesn’t particularly need to be outstanding to do so. And it isn’t.
The exterior styling is inoffensive but a little generic in its proportions and lacks the visual pizzaz of something like a BMW X2. Fine but forgetful is the theme here.
Interior? Nice, we have good materials and enough shine to remind you that you’re sat in a Benz. Some of the switches are a little cheap to touch but overall a better effort in the interior.
The drive is comfortable enough for daily cruising but when you press on, the corner-cutting becomes apparent. The suspension is usually compliant but lacks sophisticated damping to smooth out road imperfections which can result in an inconsistent ride. The transmission in comfort is a little slow-witted at times but does wake up in sport. My main gripe here is the engine. That cookie-cutter widely spread 2.0 turbo just sounds course and unrefined when you’re getting on it. It creates ample torque for a car of this class but it sounds strained when pushing on at the higher revs. And you’re forced to listen to that engine in Sport mode because it holds the revs high. Mercedes- take some tips on fake engine sounds from BMW. Doesn’t have to sound great, just not like an old Toyota having its neck rung.

Overall, an unremarkable but reasonable car in a segment that’s guaranteed to find buyers anyway.

Lucid. Another California-based auto/tech company with another electric car - the bold new 'Air'. I took out the Grand Touring model with a highly impressive listed range of 516 miles and a mammoth 819bhp with 885lb ft torque. While the power numbers sound crazy, this is just a mid-ranger. The GT Performance variant is 1050bhp and the Sapphire model is a ridiculous 1234bhp. Yes, really.
So how did the Grand Touring feel? Well the quality of materials is surprisingly high for an EV, with quality leather, wood, alcantara and a slick infotainment system with a retractable screen. Out on the road the car's long wheel base keeps things planted. Steering lacks some feel (as expected, electric steering era) but has good response. Acceleration? Like a freaking kick in the chest. Relentless thrust with no delay at all. No waiting for turbos to spool or revs to climb. Just flex your toe and you're rocketing into the next town. I can't imagine what the 1000+ hp models go like when this one slingshots the way it does. Combined with no sound, it's a pretty disconcerting yet highly addictive buzz.
Overall is this better than a Tesla Model S? Quality and finish definitely seems to a league above. But then this model starts at $154k. A lot of money to buy into a new and unproven brand. But you know what? If you're looking for a truly premium EV sedan, this might just be the one to look out for. #lucid #lucid_motors #ev #lucidair by @driver.diaries

For me, watches are all about expression, which is why I'm pretty excited to be sporting this new Tag Heuer Formula 1. The watch itself is nice but more than that, it's what the brand itself represents that really peaks my interest.
Since it's inception in 1860, Tag Heuer has been synonymous for it's participation in sport and, in particular, motor racing. They are the official partner and time keeper of the Oracle Racing Red Bull Formula 1 team and have been so for 8 years. Tag has a long standing partnership with Porsche in Formula E, the world's first and premier electric racing series and also recently in the growing world of eSports as well as the Carrera Cup.
They have been the Official Watch partner of the Monaco Grand Prix for over a decade.. and I don't even have the space here to talk about the Indianapolis 500, Le Mans and the Carrera Panamericana.
Tag has also had legendary ambassadors Ayrton Senna and Steve McQueen sporting it's pieces both on the race track and on the big screen.
In short, Tag Heuer is obsessed with motorsport... Just like me :)

I want to talk about driving assistance features for a minute. The powers that pull strings behind the scenes of the automotive industry will try to convince you that it's the future of driving, that your vehicle will increasingly be able to intervene with clever and seamless assistive-tech and make driving a more relaxed, safer and enjoyable experience.
Pure lies.
The Lane assistant in this new BMW 530i was so abrupt that at times I felt the machine snatching control away from me as it swung the wheel back towards what it felt was the correct position for me to be on the road. Worse, while driving I couldn't find the control to disable it so I was stuck with a steering wheel that occasionally disagreed with my inputs and replaced them with ones of its own.
I found it infuriating and blunted what would otherwise be a relaxed and comfortable experience with this car.
Urgh.. take me back to the good old days of minimal intervention and cars that actually did as they were told.

Anyone who grew up in the 90s will remember Scooby Doo. You know, the detective pooch with a habit of getting into spooky situations with his nerdy team of crime busters. And his little nephew was Scrappy Doo.. brave and ready to bare his little teeth depsite his tiny proportions. Well that pretty much sums up this 2015 Mercedes CLA 45 AMG. Its pint-sized 4 cylinder M133 engine runs big boost though a valved exhaust which means a cute little growl and the occasional fart (see, just like a puppy). It also looks pretty good in a come-get-some kind of vibe. Fun to throw around? Check. Attitude? There in spades.
But then things go a little south. Firstly, the interior quality on this 2015 is a stark reminder how Mercedes hasn't always found it fitting to garnish it's lower-end players with the same quality of materials as models further up the food chain. Plastic interior trim and switches have paint starting to wear alarmingly quickly for a car with fairly modest miles. The dual-clutch transmission sounds great on paper and usually works well until you try to pull away at a stoplight and there's a weird pause before it engages and gets going. Auto is fine but Shifts in manual don't seem to be as quick as you'd expect even in Sports mode which is a shame. And then there's the ride which is easily unsettled and jumpy (as if it's seen the mailman walking by). Overall it's a fun little scamp with bags of attitude and a peppy engine to match. But it's still a little compromised in the build quality and ride department. Recommended? Yes, as long as you're not expecting a perfectly behaved pup🐶

Got to spend some time in a 2020 Lexus LX570. Interesting machine.. Good looking, rugged, well built... And a bit of a dinosaur. Heavy steering makes for tiresome city driving. Instrument cluster and general cabin layout is unintuitive and old fashioned. Lexus infotainment, which operates like a PC and mouse cursor instead of a touchpad like it's peers, is a little clunky and takes some getting used to. Average ride quality, road imperfections reverberate through the cabin. Beefy V8 snarls on startup but doesn't feel particularly urgent on the road.
You can tell the LX descends from a bygone era of utility-focussed trucks from Toyota despite aspirations here of luxury and refinement. I can see the appeal for those wanting something a bit tougher than your average soccer-mom crossover but it's road manners are still stuck in the past, and premium SUV offerings from rival brands have left it way behind. And to top it off, this dino ain't cheap either 🤯
