Inflammation can look and feel a lot of different ways.

Often times, the gut is the root cause.

Which is why I advocate so much for gut health.

Comment “inflammation” for a deeper dive into yours and how to find / resolve the source.

If someone came to me with persistent digestive symptoms, I wouldn’t immediately throw probiotics or random supplements at them.

I’d start with a short 2–4 week foundational phase focused on supporting detoxification, metabolism, and overall gut function.

Then I’d run a GI-MAP to get a clearer picture of what is actually happening in the GI tract—bacterial imbalances, parasites, H. pylori, digestive function, and other markers that can change the treatment strategy.

Because the protocol should depend on the problem.
From there, I’d build the gut protocol around five priorities:

1. IDENTIFY + REMOVE
Address the specific organisms, triggers, and factors contributing to the imbalance.

2. OPTIMIZE DIGESTION
Support stomach acid, bile flow, and digestive enzymes when indicated.

3. REBUILD THE GUT BARRIER
Provide targeted support for the intestinal lining and mucosal defenses.

4. RESTORE THE MICROBIOME
Once the underlying imbalance is addressed, work toward a healthier microbial environment.

5. FIX THE TERRAIN
Sleep, stress, nutrition, movement, and lifestyle all influence whether the gut actually stays healthy.

The goal isn’t to spend months “killing bacteria.”

The goal is to figure out WHY the gut became imbalanced in the first place—and correct the environment that allowed it to happen.

That’s how you make the results last.

Do you struggle with gut issues? Have you ever had a GI test done or followed a SEQUENCED gut protocol?

Comment “GUT” and I’ll tell you the first thing I’d look at based on your symptoms.

3 markers I look for:

1. High D-lactate on an OAT

A bacterial fermentation byproduct associated with brain fog and neurological symptoms. If the gut keeps producing it, another nootropic isn’t the answer.

2. High beta-glucuronidase on a GI-MAP

Gut bacteria can reactivate estrogen the liver already processed, allowing it to be reabsorbed and recirculated.

3. Low stool sIgA

A sign that your gut’s first-line immune defense may be compromised.

And this is why generic SIBO advice fails.

More fiber isn’t always better.
Probiotics aren’t always appropriate.
You can’t ignore motility or gut-barrier repair.
The goal isn’t just killing bacteria.

It’s restoring digestion, motility, barrier function, immune defense, and hormone metabolism.

Your thyroid and your gut are not separate problems.
There is a vicious cycle that can develop:

Low thyroid function → lower metabolic output → less cellular energy + CO₂ production → impaired gut environment → microbial imbalance + increased LPS → systemic inflammation → further thyroid suppression.

And this is why simply adding a probiotic is often not the answer.

You can’t fix a metabolic problem by throwing more bacteria at the gut.

And you definitely don’t fix chronic gut dysfunction by eliminating every food until you’re eating chicken, rice, and avocado three times a day.

You have to fix the foundation first.

Start by improving metabolic function: adequate calories and carbohydrates, thyroid function, blood sugar stability, digestion, sleep, cellular energy production, and the nutrients required for proper thyroid conversion.

Then address the gut.

Once the metabolic foundation is supported, you can more effectively work on intestinal barrier integrity, digestion, motility, microbial balance, LPS burden, and inflammation.

This is why I want to see the thyroid AND gut picture together.

Functional targets I look for:

THYROID
• TSH: 0.5–1.5
• Free T3: 3.5–4.5
• Free T4: 1.0–1.5
• Reverse T3: <15
• T3 ratio: >20

GUT
• Zonulin: <80
• Calprotectin: <50
• Secretory IgA: 500–2,000
• Pancreatic elastase: >500
• Butyrate: >15% of total SCFAs

These aren’t numbers I look at in isolation. I interpret them alongside symptoms, history, medications, nutrition, and the rest of the patient’s labs.

But if you’ve been told your thyroid is “normal” while you’re dealing with fatigue, low body temperature, constipation, bloating, poor digestion, or chronic inflammation, TSH alone isn’t enough.

The thyroid affects the gut.

The gut affects systemic inflammation.

And systemic inflammation feeds right back into thyroid function.

Stop treating these systems separately. Look at the connection.

Think eating fewer carbs automatically means burning more fat?

Your metabolism doesn’t work that way.

Adequate carbohydrates support thyroid function, leptin signaling, energy production, and the metabolic pathways your body uses to oxidize fat.

Chronically under-fueling can push your metabolism in the opposite direction: lower T3, lower energy, higher stress, and fewer calories burned throughout the day.

Carbs aren’t the enemy of fat loss. A slowed metabolism is.

Do you feel better on higher or lower carbs? Comment below.
