A nonverbal autistic child may not be able to tell you what happened at school. 💔 That makes it even more important for adults to listen, observe, and protect them.

Screaming, crying, clapping, stimming, or shutting down may be ways a child expresses distress, sensory overload, fear, pain, or an unmet need. These behaviors shouldn't automatically be treated as bad behavior. Every child communicates differently and deserves to be understood.

Schools can support autistic children through visual aids, alternative communication tools, predictable routines, calm responses, and individualized support. Adults should prioritize safety and dignity instead of using shame, anger, or unnecessary force.

Your Discharge Instructions: If you witness a child with a disability being mistreated, take it seriously. Report what you observed to the appropriate school leadership or child-protection authorities, document details when safe and lawful, and contact emergency services if a child is in immediate danger.

Nonverbal doesn't mean a child has nothing to say. Sometimes, behavior is communication—and every child deserves adults who pay attention. 🤎

How can schools do more to make sure every child feels safe? Share your thoughts below. 👇🏾

Discharged While Still Seizing? Here’s What Patients Should Know

A Black woman named Nisha, who has a history of seizures, was allegedly discharged from Overland Park Regional Medical Center near Kansas City while still experiencing active seizures. Shortly after her release, she was found lying in a puddle on the side of the road, still actively seizing.

Key Advice Offered for Patients:
• Bring an advocate: Always take a trusted companion with you to medical appointments or hospital visits.
• Document everything: Write down all details, statements, and actions taken during the visit.
• Record interactions safely: Most states require notifying clinicians if you are recording them, even audio only, so request permission to film or record to ensure full transparency and accountability.

Patients deserve to feel heard, informed, and safe when receiving medical care.

Have you ever brought someone with you to a hospital visit because you didn't want to navigate it alone? 👇

If you enjoy learning how to advocate for yourself and your family in healthcare, subscribe. I break down medical situations, health science, and patient education with evidence, practical explanations, and no unnecessary hype.

😳 Can a Toothbrush and Diaper Rash Cream Really Clear Up Acne? 🪥🤎

Desperate for clearer skin, people are trying some unusual TikTok hacks. But does this combination actually work?

A toothbrush is designed for teeth, not facial skin. Even soft bristles can cause irritation and damage your skin barrier. Scrubbing doesn't unclog pores or treat acne, and it may make redness and inflammation worse.

Diaper rash creams often contain zinc oxide, which can help protect and soothe irritated skin. But zinc oxide isn't an established acne treatment, and thick, occlusive formulas may not suit acne-prone skin.

Your Discharge Instructions: Skip the toothbrush. Use evidence-based acne treatments instead, such as salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, or a topical retinoid. Start slowly to reduce irritation, use a gentle cleanser, and choose a non-comedogenic moisturizer. If acne is painful, severe, or leaving scars, speak with a dermatologist.

What's the wildest skincare hack you've seen or tried? Tell us below. 👇🏾

😳 Can You Really Save Yourself From Choking With a Chair? 🪑🤎

A medical worker in Turkey reportedly used a chair to help clear a choking blockage while alone. But there are important safety steps to know.

When food blocks your airway, you may be unable to speak, cough, or breathe. If you're alone and choking, call emergency services immediately if you can. Then perform abdominal thrusts on yourself: make a fist, place it just above your navel, hold it with your other hand, and thrust inward and upward. You can also press your upper abdomen against the back of a sturdy chair or another firm edge. Avoid sharp edges.

Your Discharge Instructions: Don't wait for the blockage to clear on its own if you cannot breathe. Repeat the thrusts until the object comes out. If you can cough forcefully, keep coughing. Once the blockage is cleared, seek medical assessment, especially if you still have trouble breathing, pain, or persistent coughing. Learn these techniques through a certified first-aid course rather than trying forceful practice on yourself.

Noticing lighter patches on your skin that seem to appear out of nowhere? There may be more happening beneath the surface. 🤎

Vitiligo is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system mistakenly attacks melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing skin pigment. As these cells are lost, patches of skin become lighter or completely white.

Your Discharge Instructions: Vitiligo is not contagious, and it isn't caused by poor hygiene or anything you did wrong. It can affect people of all skin tones and may appear on the hands, face, elbows, and other areas. The patches can change over time, and their progression varies from person to person.
One light patch doesn't automatically mean vitiligo. Other skin conditions can also cause changes in pigmentation, so have new or changing patches evaluated by a qualified clinician, ideally a dermatologist. Early assessment can help identify the cause and discuss treatment options.

Vitiligo deserves understanding, not stigma. 🤎

This woman was reportedly left waiting for over 30 minutes despite being close to delivery. Suspected active labor or imminent delivery requires immediate assessment by maternity staff. Paperwork, insurance checks, and registration should never delay urgent medical evaluation.

In the U.S., Black women are about three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women. These disparities persist across income and education levels, highlighting the impact of systemic racism and unequal treatment in maternal healthcare.

Your Discharge Instructions: Make a birth plan with your maternity care team. Know where to go when labor starts, understand the hospital's triage process, and bring someone you trust to advocate for you and document concerns. If you feel dismissed, clearly explain your symptoms and ask for an immediate assessment.

Every pregnant person deserves to be heard and taken seriously.

When Medical Bias Makes Patients Afraid to Seek Care

Ever left a healthcare appointment feeling judged instead of cared for? Sometimes, medical bias isn't obvious. It shows up in a dismissive comment, an assumption, or the way a patient is treated.

For some Black patients, these experiences can deepen mistrust in healthcare and make seeking care feel uncomfortable or unsafe. Microaggressions may seem small to the person making them, but their impact on patients can be lasting.

Your Discharge Instructions: If you feel dismissed or disrespected, consider bringing someone you trust to your appointment, writing down what happened, and asking questions until you understand your care. You can request another clinician or file a complaint through the appropriate patient relations channel. If you feel unsafe, seek support and care elsewhere when possible.

Everyone deserves respectful, compassionate healthcare. Being heard should never feel like a privilege.

😳Can flexing your muscles too hard actually make you pass out? 😳💪🏽

The answer is yes, especially if you're bracing intensely and holding your breath.

This can trigger something called the Valsalva maneuver. When you push against a closed airway, pressure inside your chest rises and temporarily changes blood flow to your heart and brain. These changes can contribute to dizziness or fainting.

Your Discharge Instructions: Never assume fainting during exercise is harmless. It can have several causes, including potentially serious heart problems. If someone faints during exercise, they should get prompt medical evaluation. Avoid deliberately holding your breath while straining, and don't practice extreme flexing alone.

If someone faints and doesn't quickly regain consciousness, has chest pain, or has trouble breathing, call emergency services.

Your body might be stronger than you think, but passing out is not a flex. 🤎

When your husband works HVAC and the saxophone keeps getting louder… 🎷😭 But did you know that looking directly at certain UV lamps can injure your eyes?

UVC light is used in some germ-killing systems, but direct exposure can damage the cornea, the clear front surface of your eye. This injury is called photokeratitis—basically, a sunburn of the eye.

Symptoms can include pain, redness, watery eyes, light sensitivity, and a gritty feeling. They may not appear immediately and can develop hours after exposure.

Your Discharge Instructions: Never stare directly at UVC lamps, even briefly. Follow the manufacturer's safety instructions and use proper shielding. If you suspect exposure and develop eye pain or vision changes, seek medical advice. Don't rub your eyes or use random eye drops.

If you work with HVAC equipment or UV disinfection systems, proper protection matters. Don't gamble with your eyesight. 🤎🛠️

Have you ever accidentally looked at one of these lights without knowing the risks? Tell us below. 👇🏾
