Just wrapped up my site visit in Panama City, and I am SO excited about what we have planned for our next Writing Well Retreat for Researchers! 🇵🇦✨

I spent the last few days exploring the city, visiting our retreat spaces, participating in cultural activities, enjoying some incredible food, and putting the finishing touches on what I know will be a really special experience.

One of my favorite parts of planning these retreats is finding ways to create an environment where people can make meaningful progress on their writing while also having the space to rest, explore, connect, and enjoy themselves.

And Panama is going to give us all of that and then some! 😍

Sharing a few highlights from my visit so you all can get a glimpse of how amazing it will be.

We have 5 more spots open. If you’re interested, DM me so we can get you registered before we sell out!

Researchers leave this retreat with grants drafted, papers submitted, and brains/bodies rested so they are ready to start off the new year refreshed.

Go ahead and share this to your story and send this to a researcher who really needs this retreat experience!

Panama, nos vemos pronto! 🇵🇦❤️

The semester has barely started and academia is already asking for our nights, weekends, and nervous systems. 😩

Every semester, academia tries to convince us that the only way to be successful is to be overextended.

Not this one.

This semester, I will be intentional about deliberately creating an environment where I can thrive professionally and personally.

I hope you do the same for yourself ✨🙏🏽

Just won my first million dollar NIH grant as an MPI and I am over the moon because this project, focused on supporting junior faculty in research, is very close to my heart and necessary. There is a tear jerking back story but for now, we celebrate 🎉

This is proof that our work can still be done and funded in this climate. We put in so much intentional strategy in developing this proposal. And our efforts paid off 🙏🏽

I am committed to marking this with a joyful celebration of my hard work because too often we pat ourselves on the back and then set our sights on the next goal without savoring the wins, big or small.

How do yall celebrate grant wins? Any ideas for celebrating without sweets? 👀😅😩

This is major for me. I don’t think I have ever done this since I got my PhD 😭 and I am beyond proud of myself.

No laptop. No “quick emails.” No regrets. 👏🏾

This is why systems matter: our careers should be able to keep moving even when if we stop to take a breath.

My focus groups still were scheduled.
Manuscripts still were drafted.
One manuscript submitted.
Another manuscript’s proofs were revised.
Admin paperwork completed.

And I was sitting on the beach making sandcastles with my babies thinking about whether I wanted fried snapper or curry for dinner.

We did it Joe!

In Portugal, one of my retreat attendees told me she had a family vacation planned immediately after the retreat. She was really excited about it and said she desperately needed it. She said she hadn’t had a real work-free vacation in years.

During the retreat, a funding announcement came out that was aligned with her work and she cancelled her vacation so she would have enough time to work on the grant before the deadline.

My heart sunk because I have been in those shoes so many times before … delaying rest, constantly setting a new goal to do just one more thing, pushing myself deadline to deadline until I couldn’t push anymore.

I’m begging you all to choose differently, while you still have a chance to.

Summer is almost over and a new academic year will be here in 2 minutes 😩 so pleeeeaaassseeee let the work wait so you can do something for you.

You have earned it and more than deserve it. by @drjasmineabrams

Back from Portugal and still savoring the sweetness another amazing @writing_well_retreat!

Swipe to see a few moments from our week-long journey in Porto - 7 days of breathtaking views, open laptops, and intentional practices to rejuvenate mind, body, and spirit.

No collection photos can fully capture or explain what I like to call the “magic” of a retreat. The glimmer of hope a burned out researcher experiences after months of exhaustion, the moment of clarity an early career researcher has for the first time in their career, the joy and excitement of newfound collaborators, the weightlessness of those who are always needed by others, the commitments to doing work and life better long after the plane ride home.

That is why I do this work - those moments.

This retreat reminded me that more than researchers need time to write, they need time to explore, be curious, experience joy, feel supported, rediscover their passions, reflect on the good they’ve done, and dream of the good they will do.

We need places to help us remember who we are and why are work matters. And I’m honored to be a facilitator of that magic.

I am walking away from Portugal, feeling incredibly grateful for every conversation, every laugh over dinner, every page written, every breakthrough, and every person who trusted me to create the space.

Also walking away feeling eager to host our next retreat in January - can yall guess where it will be? 👀

The most productive researchers I know are not the ones who are doing the most. They are the researchers who got crystal clear about what they want and what will actually get them there.

It’s your turn friend ✨

Save this one… especially slides 4 and 5, to help guide your planning for this week and ideally next semester.
