POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
When I was struggling with chronic pain and strange, unexplained symptoms, I started reading everything I could to understand what was happening in my body.

Some books really changed how I understood pain and helped me on my recovery journey.

If I could recommend just ONE, it would be The Way Out by Alan Gordon. An absolute must-read, in my opinion! 📚

I've also included two books on my reading list, written by people whose work I've followed and appreciated for years.

Have you read any of these? ✨ taken in Malmö, Sweden by @drkajarupar

I study the human body and disease for a living 👩‍🔬 Yet for 5 years, I couldn't figure out what was happening in my own body.

After countless tests and specialists, I still had no explanation for my chronic pain and strange symptoms.

Then I discovered the mind–body approach to chronic pain.

My first thought? WHAT NONSENSE.

But as a scientist, questioning claims and evaluating evidence is literally my job. So I started reading research, books and listening to pain experts 📚

And what I discovered surprised me 🧠

Our nervous system can produce very REAL pain and symptoms without ongoing tissue damage. Fear, expectations and learned associations can play a huge role.

Instead of fearing every sensation, I learned to observe my symptoms with curiosity, question my triggers and gradually return to activities I'd been avoiding.

Today, I'm about 90 % better!

Every time I avoided something because I was afraid it would trigger my chronic pain and all those strange, unexplained symptoms, I was unintentionally teaching my brain that the activity was dangerous.

Over time, my brain started associating more and more everyday activities with pain.

And my world kept getting smaller.

🧠 Avoidance can reinforce the pain–fear cycle. When our brain learns to expect danger, it can produce or amplify real pain, even without ongoing damage.

Understanding this helped me gradually face my fears, rebuild trust in my body and start doing the things I loved again.

What if the way your chronic pain behaves is giving you clues about what's causing it? 🔎

Have you noticed any of these patterns?

👉 Your pain moves around or switches sides.

👉 Some days it's unbearable and others it's fine (good and bad days)

👉 Your symptoms change depending on stress, emotions or where you are.

👉 You can sit comfortably on your couch, but sitting in a car triggers pain.

👉 New symptoms appear after reading or worrying about a condition.

Here's the good news! 🧠

The way your pain behaves can give us important clues that it might be neuroplastic pain.

This means your nervous system may be producing or amplifying very REAL symptoms, even without ongoing tissue damage explaining them.

And the best part? Your nervous system can learn new responses, too!

Understanding this helped me reduce fear and improve my chronic pain and symptoms by around 90%.

I know how isolating and disheartening it is to be constantly told that you're fine, that nothing is wrong.

But you're still in chronic pain. Maybe you're experiencing strange symptoms. And you KNOW something isn't right.

I spent 5 years in this situation.

Some of the doctors and physiotherapists I saw genuinely did their best to help me, and I'm forever grateful to them. 🤍
But despite all the investigations, I was still left without answers.

It wasn't until I learned about neuroplastic pain that things started turning around for me.

Here's what I wish I'd known sooner:

🧠 Neuroplastic pain is REAL pain. It can be just as intense and debilitating as pain caused by tissue damage. It's not imagined, and it's not "all in your head."

And it's about much more than just stress.

Stress can contribute, but fear of pain, constantly monitoring symptoms and avoiding activities we associate with pain can also keep the nervous system on high alert, perpetuating the pain–fear cycle.

Understanding this helped me gradually reduce my fear, rebuild trust in my body and improve my symptoms by around 90%.

If you're living with persistent, unexplained pain or symptoms, I share what helped me and how understanding pain differently can open up new possibilities. ✨

For me, one of the biggest steps towards recovering from chronic pain and unexplained symptoms was reducing my fear of them.

But how could I feel safe in my body when I didn't understand what was happening?

These are the 3 steps that helped me:

1. I educated myself about pain. 🧠

I needed to understand how pain actually works, and how the nervous system can create real symptoms even without ongoing damage. Understanding this was the first step towards feeling safe.

2. I started looking for evidence of safety. 🔎

I questioned my assumptions. I looked at how my symptoms behaved, whether they moved around or changed with stress, and what my doctors and tests had shown. I started seeing my symptoms differently.

3. I learned from other people's recovery stories. ✨

Hearing from people who'd experienced similar symptoms and improved gave me hope. It helped me believe that I could get better too.

And slowly, as my fear decreased, so did my symptoms. Today, I'm about 90% better!

If you're living with unexplained chronic pain or symptoms, I help people understand their pain, reduce fear and rebuild confidence in their bodies.

Not every pain flare meant I'd done something wrong.

Whenever my chronic pain flared up or a new symptom appeared, I'd immediately analyse EVERYTHING I'd done.

Was it that walk?
That workout?
Did I sit too long? 🤔

For example, I'd clean the house and the next day my hands would tingle and hurt, and my lower back would ache. I started associating cleaning with pain, and soon it became a trigger.

But here's what I wish I'd known earlier:
✨ not every flare means damage✨

Sometimes our nervous system learns to associate certain activities with pain. Our brain starts anticipating pain, and that expectation can contribute to real symptoms, even without a new injury. 🧠

Learning about neuroplastic pain helped me question these associations, reduce my fear and gradually stop avoiding things.

And that was a huge part of my recovery.

If this sounds familiar, I help people living with persistent, unexplained pain and symptoms reduce fear and rebuild confidence in their bodies.

Ever had pain that seems to move around? One day it's your lower back, then a little higher up, then more on the left side...

Almost like your brain is trying to guess where the damage might be. 🤔🧠

Your brain uses signals from your body, memories, expectations and past experiences to decide when you might need protection.

Sometimes, pain can shift around without any new tissue damage.

This was me a few years ago. I tried EVERYTHING to fix my chronic hip pain.

Different sleeping positions, new pillows, shoes, hip stretches, avoiding long car rides… Nothing helped. And almost anything could trigger a flare.

Then I noticed something strange.

In the mornings, my pain was around my hip bone. By evening, it had often moved up. Was this really how pain was supposed to behave?🤔

I'd seen a hip specialist, three physiotherapists, a rheumatologist and a muscle specialist. Nobody could explain my pain.

Then I discovered neuroplastic pain and the mind-body connection. I realised my nervous system could be producing real pain without ongoing tissue damage.

Instead of trying to fix my hip, I started working on reducing my fear of pain. And slowly, things began to improve.

✨ If this sounds familiar, I help people living with chronic pain understand their symptoms, reduce fear and rebuild confidence in their bodies.

I was feeding my fear.

When I was struggling with chronic pain, every Google search, scary story and hour spent analysing my symptoms made me more afraid of them.

And that fear matters. The more threatened we feel by pain, the more our brain can amplify it.

The more afraid I became, the more I monitored my body. Every new sensation felt important. Every flare felt like another problem I needed to solve.

A huge shift for me was learning to stop treating every sensation like a threat.

Not ignoring my body, just not immediately spiralling every time it did something weird.
