We are on our last day in Cairo and in a hotel close to the airport. Attached is a huge mall that at one time was a busy popular spot. There are only a few shops left. Hit hard by Covid. Sad to see. It’s a beautiful building. by @drlcarter

Garbage City. This area houses 1.5 million people. The only income for the area comes from collecting garbage. They collect garbage from Cairo and Giza for a fee. Then they pick out the recyclables and sell them. The city is filled with garbage everywhere. by @drlcarter

We were in the catacombs in Alexandria yesterday where during the Greaco-Roman period the dead were buried. The family and friends of the dead would go into the tombs and stay for days to visit the dead. So they would bring food with them in pottery dishes but it’s bad luck to bring the dishes home so they would smash all the pottery and leave it. As a result there are pieces of ancient pottery everywhere. These pieces are genuinely from the second century. And yes I asked permission to take them. by @drlcarter

A desert ride through Wadi Rum in the back of a Honda pickup truck. We got stuck 3 times and almost rolled twice!! by @drlcarter

Petra. A 2,000 year old city carved into the rock. We climbed the back of the mountain and came down 600 steps into the city. We hiked 31,000 steps and 101 flights. We had a much earned beer at the end of the day. by @drlcarter
