In a healthy adult, tooth structure loss should generally be slow enough that you wouldn’t expect to see obvious changes from one year to the next. If we’re noticing progressive wear over a relatively short period, we should investigate the underlying cause rather than automatically assuming it’s normal aging. From a biomechanical (tooth structure) perspective, our teeth are at higher risk when there is exposed dentin (inner soft layer). This photo was taken September 9, 2001 I was 10 years old. We took the ferry to Manhattan, took photos laying down next to the twin towers, and went to a Yankees game. We all knew somebody who lost their life two days later. I remember asking my parents “why? why would someone do something so evil?” They answered best they could. Today, 25 years later, I’m sitting on a balcony at 9am on the southern coast of Italy looking out at the ocean and thinking about my ancestors who immigrated from here to the US. Being in Italy this week has made me reflect a lot on my Italian American heritage—and on how grateful I am to be an American. I’m proud of where my family came from. I love the culture, the food, the hospitality, the beauty of this country, the warmth, and the constant reminder that life should be lived, not rushed through. But the more I talk to Italians about their experience living here, the more I’m reminded of why my ancestors ultimately made the incredibly difficult decision to leave. They crossed an ocean in search of opportunity and a better future for their families. They left behind everything they knew and took a chance on a country where they believed their children could have more possibilities. And today, September 11th, being 4,000 miles from home, that story feels particularly meaningful. Twenty-five years ago, America experienced one of the most horrific acts of terrorism in our history. Thousands of innocent people lost their lives, families were changed forever, and our country was shaken to its core. Yet one of the things I think about most today is the privilege of being American. My ancestors came to America because they believed in what was possible there. Generations later, I get to stand in the country they left behind and appreciate its incredible beauty—while also recognizing just how fortunate I am to call the United States home. #NeverForget taken in Palazzo Murat Positano by @drmattasaro

It’s always an honor when a fellow dentist comes to me for his smile makeover. This dr is also an international lecturer, implant surgeon, multi practice owner, serial entrepreneur, dental technology company owner, and all around badass of a human. I’m glad we were able to make something special for him.
