Racism can impact your mental and physical health. Let’s get Smarter in Seconds about it with @drmichaelhforde and @raquelmartinphd!When existing day-to-day means facing microaggressions and watching harassment of people from your community on the news the stress from racism is impossible to avoid.This can create a physiological stress response that can impact immune responses, the digestive system, mood, motivation, and fear. A recent study showed that Black people have more blood markers of inflammation, which is a biological signal of chronic stress. This may explain why Black life expectancies are shorter than White life expectancies.And it’s not because White people have some physiological immunity to stress, it is that Black people experience chronic stress at higher rates. An Asian man questioned whether Lupita Nyong’o is beautiful enough to play Helen of Troy 😭 But what he is actually defending is not beauty... it is a standard. A Eurocentric beauty standard introduced through colonialism and globalized through power until it felt like common sense. People Magazine named Lupita Nyong’o the World’s Most Beautiful Person in 2014. In 1961, President Kennedy handpicked a Black Air Force pilot to become America’s first Black astronaut candidate. 🚀 Ed Dwight faced discrimination and completed the training anyway, only to be passed over. When JFK was assassinated, his path to NASA quietly closed. He became a sculptor instead. A Black woman in a hospital bed told a provider she was in pain during a sickle cell crisis and was accused of trying to get high 😭 She said she had been on that exact regimen for 34 years. And peer reviewed research confirms that Benadryl is used alongside opioids in sickle cell treatment to manage opioid-induced itching... it is in the medical literature 👀 That is not medicine. Getting sick shouldn’t come with a court date. A KFF/NPR investigation found 56 percent of Black adults report owing medical debt vs 37 percent of white adults 📊. Worse: majority-Black neighborhoods face ~40 percent more debt collection judgments... even with the same income, credit score, and payment history 😳. Garnished paychecks, wrecked credit, judgments that follow you for years. This isn’t about who got sick. A young white man made a video about code switching and said people can sound ratchet when talking to their boss 😭 What he was actually describing is AAVE... a fully documented distinct linguistic system with its own syntax grammar and history. Code switching is not a tip for leveling up. It is a documented psychological cost. And advice that asks people to shrink themselves to fit into spaces built on someone else’s cultural standard is not help. The 13th Amendment freed the slaves. But buried in its text was one exception: "except as a punishment for crime." Mississippi didn’t even wait for ratification, passing a vagrancy statute so broad that being unemployed or homeless was a crime. 📜 Unpayable fines meant forced labor, often on the same plantations people had just been freed from. Freedom was written into law in 1865. A Black woman’s doorbell camera caught her white neighbor folding up her doormat and throwing it down the trash chute 😭 When confronted the neighbor admitted she did it because she didn’t like it. And because "no one else on this floor has a mat like that." The mat featured a Black woman and the phrase "Did You Call First" 👀 She had no right to touch it. No right to move it. No right to throw it away. Eugene Bullard flew fighter planes in World War One, ran the hottest nightclub in Paris, and spied on Nazi officers who had no idea he spoke fluent German. 🕵🏾‍♂️ Born in Georgia in 1895, he fled a lynch mob at eleven and became the first Black American pilot in history because his own country wouldn’t let him fly.
