There came a point where I stopped telling my wife every time I slipped up.

Not because I didn’t care.
Not because I was hiding.

Because I finally realized I was weaponizing honesty to avoid responsibility. Every time I told her, I was handing her the weight of a battle I hadn’t yet chosen to take responsibility for and I was unloading my guilt so I could feel better for a moment—but other than that I wasn’t actually doing anything to change.

I was outsourcing my integrity and I’d dress it up with lines like:

ā€œI just want to be honest with you.ā€
ā€œI promise I’ll do better.ā€

But I was trying to skip the part where I learned what to do to hold myself. There was a voice in me that would whisper:

ā€œBut you’re not being honest. You’re lying. You’re hiding.ā€

That voice? It wasn’t truth. It was shame dressed up as integrity. Truth isn’t what you confess to others—it’s what you finally choose to face within, express, and embody.

I stopped telling her because it was no longer her burden to carry, as this was my path to walk, as it came to me. My choice to make. Finally—my responsibility to claim.

Here’s the most important part.

When you actually make contact with the Creator, you do not feel affirmed. You feel undone. Isaiah stands in the presence of God and cries, ā€œWoe is me, I am undoneā€ (Is. 6:5). Peter falls at Jesus’ feet: ā€œDepart from me, I am a sinful manā€ (Luke 5:8). That is not self-hatred. That is healthy shame — the creaturely blush of being fully seen by something greater than you. It’s not an excuse to be a martyr or a masochist.

It keeps you human or grounded. It is the sane, holy smallness of the finite standing before the Infinite. It hurts, and it heals, and it means you’re actually there.

Toxic shame says I am worthless. Healthy shame says I am seen, and I am small. The first is the wound festering. The second is the wound becoming a doorway.

The armored religious self — the one who performs righteousness precisely so it never has to break — cannot feel healthy shame. It has built its entire structure to avoid the wound. So when it’s confronted with the breaking, it doesn’t soften. It sneers with pride and pride is the root of all shame.

In our language ā€œheartā€ means feelings or the tender interior. In Hebrew it’s the opposite. The lev is the will. The governing throne. The self-managing center that runs the whole operation.

So when Scripture calls the lev crooked and incurable, it is not condemning your capacity to feel. It is exposing the part of you that stays in control. The calculator. The manager. The one who would rather strategize than honor the break or surrender.

Now watch what God says the cure is.
ā€œI will take away the stony heart, and give you a heart of flesh.ā€
Ezekiel 36:26.

The word for flesh there is basar. The good heart is the fleshly one. Soft. Tender. Capable of being wounded. God’s remedy for the crooked heart is not a more disciplined heart. It’s a more breakable one. The opposite of the sick heart is not a controlled heart. It’s a broken-open one.

ā€œThe sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.ā€ — Psalm 51:17.
Shabar — to shatter. Dakah — to crush.

ā€œThe LORD is near to the brokenhearted.ā€ — Psalm 34:18.

Nearness is located at the fracture. You do not reach God by healing the wound and presenting the repaired self. You reach Him by traversing it. The heart is the wound, where the wound is the door, and the only way in is through. by @drmitchellmartin

Part 1 or 3

In my experience of coming from a christian background and working with men and woman that come from that are without trust in their hearts or body. In fact they avoid it.

You have been taught that your heart and body are evil. Where, which you will attest to and thats okay, you have been taught to distrust the wrong thing.

Every time someone quotes Jeremiah 17:9:

ā€œThe heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wickedā€

They’re standing on a mistranslation, and your subscribing to that allows you to keep missing the mark.

ā€œWickedā€ in Hebrew is anush which means sick, frail, or incurable. It’s the same word used for a wound that won’t close. Jeremiah isn’t accusing your heart of villainy. He’s diagnosing it as wounded beyond self-repair.

ā€œDeceitfulā€ — aqov — is the root of Jacob, the heel-grabber meaning crooked, bent, or without running straight

Read it as it was written:

The heart is bent above all things, and wounded beyond its own cure — who can know it?

That is not a verdict. That is an invitation. by @drmitchellmartin
