The traditional path to medicine feels like this:

High school → college → MCAT → apply → hope.

For many students, that means years of uncertainty.

But there’s another route — one that starts earlier.

Combined BA/MD and BS/MD programs allow students to secure their medical school seat directly out of high school.

That’s how I started medical school at 18.

And became a physician at 24.

This wasn’t about:
❌ Family connections
❌ Thousands of volunteer hours
❌ Being “the smartest” student

It was about learning the options early — and preparing intentionally.

These programs are competitive.

But the real disadvantage isn’t intelligence.

It’s awareness.

Students who don’t know this pathway exists can’t prepare for it in time.

Real talk: I truly LOVE having students shadow me, but there’s a huge difference between students who maximize the experience and those who..well, don’t. 😅

Here’s how to be the student I remember (and write stellar recommendation letters for):

📚 Come with baseline healthcare knowledge I want to share my best pearls and insider tips with you more than basic terminology. DM me & I’ll send you my free Medical Decoder Guide for the highlights!When you understand what we’re discussing, I can give you the REAL insights that will set you apart

⏰ Arrive early and make friends with staff Get there 15 minutes early and introduce yourself to nurses, MAs, and front desk staff. They’ll often give you a tour and show you where bathrooms are (so you don’t accidentally follow me in there - this happens WAY more than you think! 😂)

🎯 Treat it like a job interview Because it basically is! Be kind to EVERYONE, have situational awareness, and ask thoughtful questions at appropriate times. These people often become your letter writers.

📱 Phone = invisible Seriously. Don’t even look at it. Ever.

🍎 Bring snacks and comfortable shoes We move fast, and you need to keep up. Low blood sugar + medical procedures = recipe for disaster. Granola bars (without peanuts are ideal).

💡 Know when to sit down If you feel faint, immediately sit on the floor with your back against a wall and tell someone. No shame - you’re seeing things for the first time! We just don’t want you getting hurt.

The truth? Students who come prepared with baseline knowledge get SO much more value from shadowing. They ask better questions, make stronger connections, and leave with insights that actually help their applications stand out.

That’s just one small part of what I teach when working together - the foundation knowledge that transforms your shadowing experiences from basic observation to strategic career building.

As a physician, one thing genuinely surprises me…

Most parents have never heard of medical school pathways that can allow qualified students to begin medical school as early as 18. 🩺

That means some students may:
✅ Enter medical school directly from high school through select BA/MD or BS/MD programs
✅ Skip the MCAT for many of these programs
✅ Graduate with an MD years earlier than the traditional path

The heartbreaking part?

Many families don’t discover these opportunities until junior or senior year, when much of the preparation window has already passed.

It’s not because their child isn’t capable.

It’s because they didn’t know these pathways existed.

The earlier students learn about their options, the more time they have to build physician mentorship, meaningful clinical experiences, and competitive applications.

I’m a 30 year old doctor and I’m not afraid to admit that:

I almost walked out of my med school interview when I found out how much it was actually going to cost. I didn’t grow up with money, and it was the biggest number I’d ever seen.

I got a C on my very first medical school exam and thought I wasn’t cut out for this.

There’s this pressure I carry to provide for my family and patients. It means a lot to me, but honestly, it wears me down more than I like to admit.

When I started medical school, and even right after I graduated, I thought confidence would just show up eventually. It didn’t. I had to build it one step at a time.

I wanted to become a doctor for the money before I ever practiced a single day of medicine. Now the only thing I actually want is to be able to treat the people who need it most for free.

I became an attending at 27, and some of the hardest moments along the way, the ones that felt like failing at the time, ended up pushing me toward becoming a better doctor than I ever thought I’d be.

Being a doctor means spending your life learning, not just about the newest medicine, but about yourself, and how to keep changing and getting better.

Sometimes the hardest moments, the ones where you feel like you’re failing, are exactly what push you toward something even better than you originally imagined.

And if there’s one thing I wish I could give every aspiring doctor, it’s a clearer understanding of the path ahead.

My dad worked in pest control, and I wanted to become a doctor. 🪳🩺

He supported my dream, but he had no idea how to help me navigate the journey—and honestly, neither did I.

I didn’t know which extracurriculars mattered, how to find physicians to shadow, or that there were different pathways into medical school, including BS/MD and BA/MD programs.

And that’s the reality for so many aspiring doctors. You can have the passion, the ambition, and the willingness to work hard, but still feel completely lost because you don’t know where to start.

The truth is, navigating the path to medicine can be much easier when your parents already understand the system. But your child’s dream shouldn’t depend on whether you went to medical school yourself.
