We did it TOGETHER!

Four years ago, we ended our undergraduate journey at the University of Colorado Boulder.

We truly could not have made it without the unconditional love and support of each other.

Jonah graduated 👨‍🎓 magna cum laude (thesis on his neuroscience research🔬 on 🐭🧠 ) with Double Degrees - one in Neuroscience 🧠 and the other Molecular 🧬 Cellular 🧫 and Developmental Biology (MCDB)

Stephanie graduated 👩‍🎓 with a degree in Psychology, a Minor in Dance 💃🏼 and a Certificate in Neuroscience 🧠

We both continued our Leadership training (after being accepted into the Leadership honors program where we had first met during the interview) and each received a Minor in Leadership.

As Mae Jemison (the first black female to go to space 👩🏿‍🚀) said: “Never limit yourself because of others’ limited imagination; never limit others because of your own limited imagination.” 💫

College was the opportunity to try new things, follow our evolving interests, & live-out our imagination ✨

As we prepare to start out 3rd year in Medical school (clinical rotations) we will hold on to that idea to not limit ourselves nor let others limit our imaginations ✨

Medical School in the USA 🇺🇸 is a money💰 game for the the wealthy, no wonder it is close to impossible for lower and middle class individuals to pursue medical careers. We each grew up in middle class but have been living at the lower income level for the past 7 years. This is why a large majority of black and latino students, who are historically from lower income families, struggle to apply and pursue medicine 👩🏽‍⚕️👨🏽‍⚕️

Just to Apply to Med School: $3,000 MINIMUM (us $10k EACH)
- Bachelor’s degree 🎓 $$$
- MCAT test: $320 (most take it more than once)
- MCAT resources 📚 (practice tests, tutors, books): over $1000
- Primary Application: $170 +$40/school (at minimum 10 schools we did 40 each)
- Secondary Applications - about $100 per school
- Fly ✈️ for interviews- $200 for flights per interview
- Hotel 🏨 for interview - $100 a night minimum
- Clothing 🤵 for interview - $200
- Second look- flight ✈️ and hotel again

Med School (yay!)- $5,000 minimum of extras
- Moving expenses 🛻 📦 - $1000 minimum
- Technology- iPad and computer 🧑‍💻 - $2000
- 2-3 mandatory virtual resources (pathoma, sketchy, Boards and Beyond are the minimum)- $1000
- Clothing 🩺 - scrubs, business casual- varies but average $1000

Step 1 Exam: $1000 minimum
- STEP 1 exam $645
- Tutoring, some places charge $250/hr!?
- Practice exams $60 * 6 exams
- Study resources: hundreds 💵 if you didn’t buy already

“Wellness” - depends how creative you are 😉 but still $$
- Healthy food 🍲
- Exercise equipment, gym, something! 🚴
- Therapy, a lot of it! 💕
- Fun things you enjoy/hobbies

Some med students are fortunate to have their family help financially or fully pay for their medical adventures. We are NOT one of those and our 💳 credit cards, student loan accounts, and financial well being have been been devastated by it. (Med school x 2!!)

Do NOT go into medicine lightly. We want to be doctors 🥼 to make meaningful differences in our patients’s lives and the rest of the world, but sometimes it truly hits us and makes us question if this is all worth it… IT IS WORTH IT ❤️ taken in Chicago Downtown by @drmoss_squared

The month of June went by in a blink of an 👁️ Here’s some of the highlights…..

🏡 Jonah & I bought our first home ❤️

🩺 I presented my lived experience & 2 posters of my QI work at APA (videos on YouTube)

🌉 Went back to SF for a much needed family vacation & visted friends @jolenemin1 & Family - including 🍷 country!

💒 @drmoss_squared celebrated our 9th wedding anniversary

🏥 Finished my FINAL adult in-pt psychiatry rotation in residency

📟 Last Overnight Call Shift as a PGY-2 Psych Resident

👶🧒 Started my Child & Adolescence Fellowship App

🎤 Gave Wellness talk during PGY1 orientation (just posted video recording)

➡️ PGY-3 Psychiatry & Jonah a PGY-4 in Neurology

Today is MOVING DAY! 🏡 📦

A huge THANK YOU to our realtor @casey170 who kept telling us “we could do better” even when we were trying to settle (multiple times) on other not perfect houses 🏘️

🔐We did a thing! 🏡

This has honestly been the hardest picture to post on social media…. (and if you know my page that should be hard to believe because I share a lot of taboo & private topics)

It feels unreal 😵‍💫

I feel like a huge imposter 🫥

I feel embarrassment 🫣

😵‍💫 It feels unreal because every year since we were 18yrs old we have moved to different rentals and other’s home

🫥 I feel like an imposter because in medschool during LOA we almost became homeless multiple times for being unable to afford rent

🫣 I feel embarrassed because my socials are to educate & inspire others. Not to boast (contrary to what the haters say)

But anyway, ya we FINALLY DID IT & Bought our DREAM HOME! 🏡 🤩😍

Celebrating the beautiful second Neuro-Psych Doctor couple Yuqing & Michael! @phoood14 & @mickeycpak

In addition to a heartwarming traditional American wedding ceremony they partook in a traditional Korean Wedding ceremony where the parents welcomed the couple into the family!

Always a blast to hang out with all of the PGY3 @rushneurology cohort who all requested the day off to celebrate with this dynamic duo!

👨🏼‍⚕️Dr J Moss is doing his first moonlighting shift in the Neuro ICU TODAY - getting paid $100/hour instead of his usual $14/hour as a Neuro resident😳

He can only pick up 1️⃣ shift because of the 80-hour workweek cap (he is on clinic this week)

This pay rate is just the standard rate for the APPs who opted out of the shift this weekend

💭 So it begs the question: Should resident doctors - who carry major responsibility and sacrifice 8+ years of training - be paid this little?

Or finally be paid what we’re worth for the SAME or MORE amount of work?
