We broke barriers to gain better outcomes.
We built better boundaries to build stronger teams.
We closed gaps to grow students and staff.
We examined our own biases to enhance the growth of teams.
We crossed continents to cultivate the practice of education leaders globally.
We dug deep into the data to dismantle academic achievement gaps and increase achievement.
And that was just in 2025. We are continuing to serve empowered in 2026!

What we do...
Self-empowerment and sustainable leadership practices
Strategic, data-informed decision-making
Instructional leadership systems that drive excellence

In 2026, there's more in store.

What we know...
The efficacy of school and district leaders to carry out this work matters.
Having the right data and using it the right way matters.
Relentlessly, moving instruction with excellence matters.

You're invited to this journey. We'd love to do this work with you. Drncgarrett.com/contactus

This week holds its own adventures in education, but I keep coming back to Woodland Park Schools.

When plans meet reality, it may not look the way we expected.

So what do we do?

We build:

Common language.
Common practice.

In a room full of educators, including the superintendent, principals, and teachers, we worked together to make more concrete what it means to serve students with compassion, kindness, and support.

Not simply as a value.

As a practice.

As an expectation.

Because, when plans meet reality, the goal isn't always to change direction.

Sometimes, the right move is to create the clarity people need to stay on track.

That means making sure educators have a shared language for what we expect to see, a common understanding of what it looks like in practice, and the ability to recognize when support or adjustment is needed.

That's the work.

That's what makes professional learning matter beyond the room where it happens.

When plans meet reality in your district, what helps your teams stay on track?

Yesterday in Woodland Park, NJ, I had the opportunity to work with educators around a deceptively important leadership challenge:

How do we create a common language for teacher growth and school improvement?

It connects directly to the work district leaders are doing in these first 30 days of school.

Implementation rarely unfolds exactly as planned.

The leadership question is:
What is the right choice to stay on track?

Sometimes, that means adjusting.
Sometimes, it means providing more support.
Sometimes, it means staying the course.

A common language helps leaders make that distinction together.

What helps your leadership team decide when to adjust and when to stay the course?

New CAO operationalizing a new academic improvement plan.

It was a good plan.
It had been approved by the state, supported by the board, and our team knew exactly what was at stake. Everyone was watching the metrics and doing the work.

Then, after several weeks of walkthroughs, we started seeing something we hadn't expected.

Lesson plans weren't as strong. Classroom management was loosening. Keeping up with the paperwork was becoming more difficult.
Our first instinct was predictable:
Maybe we need more professional development.

But instead of immediately responding with another intervention, we added another layer of evidence. We listened to teachers.

That helped us understand what the other data couldn't.
The issue wasn't that teachers didn't know what to do.
They needed more time to do the work well.

We didn't add PD.
We rearranged the PD schedule and created additional planning time.

That ended up being one of the best recalibrations we made.
The plan didn't need to be abandoned.
It needed to be supported differently.

That's why I think the first 30 days of implementation are so important.

Early evidence isn't just telling you whether your plan is working.
It's testing the assumptions underneath your plan.

And when something starts to drift, the leadership question isn't immediately, What should we add?

It may be:
What is this evidence telling us about the conditions required for the work to succeed?
That's where the real learning begins.

And a shoutout to the instructional deans who were doing the day-to-day work of helping us see, understand, and respond to what was happening in classrooms.

What has early implementation evidence caused you to reconsider this year?

By September 17, your initial August assumptions will have collided with your first 30 days of real evidence.

Attendance patterns.
Walkthrough observations.
Staff dynamics.
Instructional implementation.

The question isn't whether you have data.

The question is whether your leadership system knows what to do with it.

Don't wait until October to learn what September is already telling you.

The Leadership Operating Room™ opens registration this week.

We'll examine how leaders can turn early evidence into concrete instructional leadership decisions.

Happy Black Bookstore Day!

I just found out today is the very 1st @blackbookstore.day

So yeah, we're taking a moment to celebrate.

Black bookstores are more than marketplaces.

They hold stories from impact past and hold promise and possibilities ahead.

They are hubs for community, from social impact to small business support.

They are centers of seeing, believing, and belonging for everyone to embrace.

How can we support:

💚 Purchase books or merchandise and support their economic footprint in our communities.
❤️ Attend readings and events engaging the legacy of knowledge sharing and storytelling.
🖤 Keep sharing the impact of Black bookstores and resources @

It’s layered. Leadership that is.

Especially when you serve from the building and district levels.

It’s about students. They sit at the center.

It’s about teachers. They are the facilitators.

It’s about leaders, too. The resource and the guide.

It’s about people.

Izabela came to our Leadership Strategy Session with more than strategies on her mind. Her servant leader heart brought every student, every teacher, and the story that binds them together: their learning journey.

During our session, she created an expectation designed to bring clarity and alignment to the beginning of the school year and to each step that follows.

That kind of leadership work matters.

When leaders have greater clarity about what they are leading toward, they are better positioned to create the conditions for others to move with purpose.

Empowered Leaders Empower Learners.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to support leadership journeys.

Izabela, enjoy the opening of school.

To all leaders and learners, I pray blessings upon your year. May it be a year of clarity, growth, and meaningful learning.

Your strategy will eventually meet something you didn't plan for.

That doesn't necessarily mean the strategy was wrong.

It may mean implementation just gave you new information.

The leadership question is what you do with it.

When implementation gets messy, it's tempting to immediately look for someone to correct or another strategy to introduce.

Pause first.

Examine the system around the work.

What is actually happening?
What pattern are you seeing?
What needs to be adjusted?
Who needs support right now?
What will you do next, and how will you know if it worked?

This is the difference between reacting to implementation and leading through it.

A strong leadership system doesn't simply generate another initiative. It helps your team make the next decision with greater clarity.

Where does your team most often get stuck between strategy and execution?

Before you change it, pause.

The first weeks of school are revealing things.
Some will require action.
Some won't.

Knowing the difference can save your team from unnecessary disruption.

This week's Executive Insight asks:
What needs to change?
What needs to stay?

I wrote about the leadership decision that happens before the next strategy, initiative, or adjustment.

🔗 Read the full Executive Insight in the channel.

Then tell me:
What is your team seeing right now that has you thinking twice?
