As Black History Month comes to a close, I want to say a few things…

Black History is not regulated to a single month. It is to be honored, protected, and celebrated 365 days a year — and yes, that leap year too!

Celebrating the 100th anniversary of Black History Month is nothing short of a blessing.

To be appointed to the Governor’s Commission on African American Affairs by Governor Josh Shapiro is a blessing.

To be led by phenomenal leadership — Executive Director Sierra C. Dunn, MJD, Andréa Stanford, Brittany Forman, and Dr. Jimyse L. Brown — is a blessing.

To co-chair the Health Subcommittee alongside the fantastic Phyllis Hicks is a blessing.

To serve on this Commission with brilliant Black leaders across our Commonwealth is a blessing.

To serve on this commission with HBCU leaders from Lincoln University and Cheyney University is a blessing. Ky’Shawn Tillery-Williams

To celebrate Black History Month at the Governor’s Residence with forward-thinking leaders committed to equity and justice is a blessing.

To celebrate Black History Month with the first, Black, Female Mayor of Media Joi W. is a blessing.

We stand on our ancestors’ shoulders.
We are their wildest dreams.

We do not take this appointment lightly. We are here to serve — because we are our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers. Forever.

God is… indescribable. 💜

I am so incredibly blessed to have the opportunity to be along side Rep. Gina Curry to champion for the bipartisan bill HB1944; which will ensure those who are affected by breast cancer will not have to pay out of pocket for a diagnostic mammogram!

We are dying, and that’s no exaggeration. Post-pandemic, we are facing an epidemic — BREAST CANCER. This insidious disease spares no one. Women and men of all ages, races, religions and sexual identities are faced with the diagnosis of breast cancer.

- 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.
- 1 in 800 men will face a breast cancer diagnosis.
- Black women are TWICE as likely to die from breast cancer.
- In 2022, over 40,000 women lost their lives to this disease (CDC).

Let us remember:
- @knowingyemi , a Nigerian woman, diagnosed at 26, who passed at 30.
- @jaclynn.smith , friend, who passed at 33.
- @bossgirlsmom , advocate, who passed at 38.
- Sarah Pekera, single mom, who passed at 42.
- My Uncle Bobby who passed at 58.
These are just a few of the many lives cut short by breast cancer.

This is why HB1944 is critical. The mission is twofold:
1. Prevent breast cancer diagnoses
2. Ensure effective treatment and survival for those diagnosed

Removing financial barriers is not an option, but a necessity for survival. Diagnosis, treatment, and affordable diagnostic mammograms can significantly increase survival rates. This requires a village effort:
- We must address Immediate Needs like @unite4her
- We must incorporate Holistic and Integrative Therapies like @stillrisefarms , founded by @drmoniquegary
- We must address Healthcare Disparities among Black and Brown women, as championed by @chrysalisinitiative , founded by @truejamilkali and @touchbbca founded by @rickidove
- We must address the Maternal Health Crisis among women who are diagnosed with breast cancer during pregnancy and postpartum, as championed by @thealiciaharris and @journifortwo
- We must provide Community Resources like @byrdcancerfoundation

We must learn from our past, act in our present, and look toward eradicating breast cancer in our future. We ALL deserve to live, this is our village effort. God bless! taken in Harrisburg State Capital by @drniimani

We were truly blessed to be invited to the American Indian Cancer Foundation’s (AICAF) 14th Powwow for Hope: Dancing for Life, Love & Hope!

My mom and I flew out to represent Byrd Cancer Foundation, showing our love and support for AICAF and the incredible work they do to raise cancer awareness, share resources, and promote community healing.

As descendants of the Cherokee Tribe, we felt it was imperative that we show up—not only as representatives of our foundation, but as family, friends, allies, neighbors, and partners. Our presence was a reminder that cancer advocacy is about more than awareness. It is about connection, culture, community, and Agape love.

The event was filled with so much knowledge, fellowship, activities, and AGAPE LOVE! Attendees had access to breast, liver, lung, and prostate cancer screenings, along with valuable health education and resources to support our communities.

We showed up in honor of our family, especially Marie Pryor Byrd aka Little Grandma 💜

A special shoutout to Mindful Graphics and Printing LLC for creating our custom hoodies, creatively incorporating our logo while helping us honor Marie in such a meaningful way. Thank you for helping us carry her memory with us!

This experience reminded us of something we must never forget:
💜 We must honor.
💜 We must educate.
💜 We must show up.
💜 We must show Agape love.

We are only as good as the way we treat, support, and love one another. We pay rent on this earth by being present for each other—authentically, purposefully, purely, and lovingly.

We are grateful to stand alongside organizations that recognize the importance of culturally connected cancer education, accessible resources, and community-centered healing.

Please connect with our friends at the American Indian Cancer Foundation and learn more about their important work.

Good Afternoon Dr. Nia Bailey,

My name is Erica Jo Robinson, and I was refered to you by Beverly Brooks from wbncradio. I met Beverly through the H.E.R Story T.O.O. Anthology by Dr Carolyn Wilson, I am one of the Contributing authors.

While talking about my cancer journey with her, I told her that if I could, I was ready to share my story. Even though my diagnosis is not breast cancer, but rather Adenocarcinoma (Neoplasma of the Appendix affects 1% of the cancer population) she recommended that I get in contact with you!

I have attached a little about myself, and of course, at your leisure please take a look.

Have a great day, and I look forward to hearing from you.
Ms. EjRobinson

You told your story.

Thanks to Raquel, Ryan, Christian, Eunice and Daddy, for making it happen 💜

We became friends.

Rest Well my friend.
Love you.
See you soon. taken in Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden by @drniimani

HEAL THE YARD. 🧡 Healed. All. Of. Us. 🖤♥️💚

What began as an idea to create space for Lincoln University students to talk, breathe, connect, learn, and heal became something so much bigger than an event.

Heal the Yard was a culturally grounded mental health, wellness, unity, and community healing experience created through the partnership of the @paafamcom and Lincoln University.

And truthfully?
We didn’t just create a space for healing. We experienced it together.

PART I — THE CONVERSATION
Mental Health Forum & Panel
Thank you to our panelists Brandon, Alicia, Ricardo, Dr. Jones, and Mr. Ruffin for showing up with honesty, vulnerability, wisdom, and heart.

PART II — THE REAL CONVERSATIONS
Black Men & Mental Health: “Let’s Talk About It”
Commissioners Brandon and Kenneth created room for an honest conversation about the pressure Black men can feel to appear strong, stay silent, and carry life’s burdens alone.

Black Women & Mental Health: “Protecting My Peace”
Commissioner Faith created a meaningful space for Black women to talk about mental health, stigma, peace, financial wellness, healthy relationships, independence, friendships, and navigating college life away from home.

PART III — THE ACTIVATION ZONE
The Activation Zone brought resources, wellness, creativity, music, mindfulness, giveaways, student engagement, and meaningful conversations directly to the Yard.

Grateful for every partner who showed up to pour into our students!

And a HUGE shoutout to the donors who helped make Heal the Yard possible: @mind_ful_graphics @metrodiner @shopritestores @wegmans

And then there was the TEAM.
Our ED, Sierra, led.
Ky’Shawn had an idea.
Faith ran with it.
Dr. Harper organized.
The Commissioners followed through.

And most importantly—
WE LISTENED TO THE YOUTH.
We shared our experiences.
We made room for difficult conversations.
We laughed.
We connected.
We learned.
We had FUN!

You reminded us why this work matters.
This is bigger than one day.
It won’t stop here.
We are forever connected.
Because we are our brother’s and sister’s keeper.

And healing is a journey.
So we’ll keep walking it—TOGETHER! taken in Lincoln University of PA by @drniimani
