POSTS STORIES REELS

Hello!! I am Dr. O — and this is your guide to all things health and wellness in the Regenerative Medicine space.

As a proud Nigerian immigrant, I carry with me a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunities that have shaped my scientific and medical journey. With degrees from both Yale and Cornell, and experience as a Clinical Assistant Professor at NYU, I've had the privilege of learning from some of the best and brightest minds in medicine.

My journey into the world of Regenerative Medicine began with a simple realization: traditional approaches in medicine are often aimed at treating symptoms, and not the actual problem that led you to have symptoms in the first place! With this insight, I developed a passion for seeking solutions that address the root cause of many different health issues. I have coined this process, The Dr. O Method™.

Currently, I have a private Regenerative Medicine practice on the Upper East Side of Manhattan where The Dr. O Method™ is implemented in full force!

Be sure to follow me for my tips, tricks, and best practices for living your best, and healthiest life. Let your journey to natural beauty, health, and well-being begin!

Why might someone gradually lose muscle strength even when they have not changed their activity level?

One possible contributor is chronic systemic inflammation.

Research into inflammatory muscle wasting and anabolic resistance shows how persistent immune activity can influence the bodies ability to maintain muscle protein and respond to rebuilding stimuli.

Muscle health depends on more than physical activity alone. Nutrition, inflammatory disease, metabolic health, and the biological processes involved in muscle repair can all influence, strength and function.

Progressive or unexplained weakness deserves medically evaluation rather than being assumed to be a normal consequence of aging.

Can you be physically active and still lose muscle strength?

Yes. And this is an important distinction, especially as we get older.

Playing golf, tennis or swimming regularly provide meaningful health benefits. They can improve cardiovascular fitness, coordination, balance, and mobility.

Some also strengthen muscles. But the challenge may not be sufficient, consistent, or progressive enough to maintain strength throughout the body as we age.
Resistance training provides a different stimulus. By progressively challenging the muscles, it helps preserve the strength we need for everyday activities, including getting out of a chair, climbing stairs, and carrying groceries.

Keep enjoying your favorite activities. Just make sure strength training is part of your routine, too.

Chronic inflammation can affect more than a painful joint. It’s effects may involve muscle repair, insulin resistance, pain, sensitivity, and cardiovascular health. Learn about the risks, the biology and what may be modifiable.

Changes muscle strength can begin to affect every day activities long before we recognize how much our physical capacity has changed.

Persistent inflammation is one factor which researchers study in relation to muscle loss, impaired muscle protein synthesis, and declining physical performance.

Muscle weakness should not automatically be attributed to aging. Medical conditions, inactivity, inadequate, nutrition, and other contributors may need to be considered.

disrupted sleep, smoking, and visceral fat can contribute to low-grade inflammation overtime. They can influence immune activity and contribute to changes in blood sugar, regulation, muscle health, and cardiovascular risk.

Understanding what contributes to inflammation is an important step toward protecting your long-term health.

Chronic inflammation can develop gradually, without an obvious injury or swollen joint.

Poor sleep, chronic stress, and visceral fat influence, immune activity and contribute to changes in blood sugar, regulation, muscle health, and cardiovascular risk.

The good news is that many of these contributing factors are modifiable. Reference: Furman, et. al., 2019.

Why does back or knee pain sometimes persist long after an injury? Inflammation is part of the body‘s response to injury, but when it continues, it can interfere with tissue repair and contribute to persistent pain.

And inflammation isn’t always the whole explanation. Changes in how the nervous system processes pain can also play a role.

Understanding what driving your pain is essential to choosing the right treatment.

Chronic inflammation can affect far more than one painful joint or area i. Your spine.

When inflammation lingers, it can begin to influence multiple systems in the body.

It can contribute to:

* muscle loss and weakness
* joint pain and cartilage breakdown
* a more sensitive nervous system
* insulin resistance and blood sugar changes
* fatigue and poor sleep
* cardiovascular disease

It can also make weight regulation more difficult, especially when inflammation and insulin resistance begin to reinforce each other.

The hood news is that many of these biological processes are modifiable.

Your body is constantly repairing, rebuilding and regenerating. Movement, sleep, nutrition, metabolic health, and treatment of the underlying cause of inflammation can all influence your biology.

Over the next several posts and videos, I’m going to discuss how chronic inflammation affects different systems in the body, how you can start recognize when it could be affecting you, and what may help shift the biology towards a healthier outcome.

Hip pain made me stop exercising. But my pain was only part of my problem.

As my hip became more painful and stiff, I started to change how I moved. The muscles in the front of my hip were doing more work than the muscles that I needed for support in the back of my leg which were becoming weaker and less active.

Eventually, I had to change my mindset. I had to stop responding only to the pain and start asking myself why was I moving this way.

For me, consciously changing how I moved and recruiting my glutes and hamstrings made an enormous difference. My pain diminished significantly.

That does not mean that everyone with hip pain can simply push through it. Pain has real problems that cause it and different problems require different solutions. But your symptoms can give you information that may helps you and your doctor find the root cause instead of just chasing the pain.

That’s The Dr O Method.

Why can bending forward help make central spinal stenosis feel better?

With lumbar spinal stenosis, walking standing, can bring on pain, heaviness, numbness or weakness in the legs. Bending forward, flexes the spine and can increase the available space in the spinal canal and around the nerves. This allows more oxygen to flow.

That’s why some people with spinal stenosis, discovered that leaning forward, often bending over a shopping cart, helps them to walk further, as more oxygen gets to their nerves.

Some clinicians name this the “shopping cart sign.”

How are your symptoms changed with walking, standing and bending forward can’t give your doctor important information about what may be causing them.

I’m Dr. O, I’ve got your back.

Why does your back hurt more when you stand still, but start to feel better when you walk? One possible explanation is what happens in your face joints. Walking changes the way these small joints in the back of your spine are loaded and then unloaded as your body moves up and down during your walking motion. This pumping action in the joint can help it move more smoothly, and this can mean less pain.
