Illustrations and session work for KRK Ryden’s musical project Ken the Magic Corner God. day four was good. on day six, though, I had to put on scuba gear, dive into a shark-filled pool and do a solo in Bb minor. I almost didn’t make it… I think i’ve finally recovered. by @dronetheory

Found this photo from two years ago. One of the last pieces of art I did… assembled outside, on the top of a trashcan with spray adhesive and pieces of ephemera that I had been “saving”. All done while frantically cleaning out my storage space a couple days before I had to move. Completed in about 15 minutes… It was very satisfying to quickly transform a bunch of trash into something cool instead of just throwing it away —I paired down about 90% of my “junk”, but currently have no idea where this piece went… by @dronetheory

When an old headphone adaptor fails inside the headphone jack of an even older sampler…
At least it wasn’t an SP-1200 or a Fairlight —although they may be a little more service friendly.

It looked as if the broken adaptor might have just snapped back into the tip by re-inserting it and pulling it back out, but try as I might, no dice.

Internal access to the headphone jack was not only poor, but it was one of those thru-hole-mounted solid black plastic boxes (photo 2)— so I couldn’t push the tip out from behind.

I’ve replaced these tiny headphone/volume boards before and I seem to remember having to take apart the entire faceplate and it being a bit delicate and stressful. I even had the part (again, photo 2). But, it seemed silly to go through all that trouble. look how the screw holding the little board in is facing the “wrong” way in photo 3!

I put some superglue on the end of a bamboo skewer and very carefully inserted it into the tip without touching the inside of the jack (I totally suck at chess, but you do not want to play “operation” against me)! when it dried, I was able to pull the tip out! I had to use tiny surgical forceps to flex the jack’s ground pin, so I could slide the tip past it, all without breaking the bond.

believe it or not, this is the first time EVER that I’ve gotten superglue to perform as expected (believe me I’ve tried it on SO many projects)!
I was skeptical of the wood/plastic/metal bond. I am beside myself and just had to pass along this “tip…” by @dronetheory

This year spring about 50 of my sprouts died. So.. had a ton of mustard greens. Only one of the tomato plants survived, but it grew three times larger than I planned for! The tomatoes just keep coming… even with the bugs and a visiting box turtle. The mug is for scale and to imply how hip and with-it I am. by @dronetheory

Brought to my attention and passing this on… This weird house for sale belonged to Albert Cuellar who was the prop maker for the 1994 Ed Wood film, did costumes for Sir Mixalot’s Baby Got Back video and also did the album cover for Slayer’s Hell Awaits. He was also active in the LA Discordian Society.

The legacy of his many props and work materials are still there— and come with the property at 624 E Colden Ave in East LA.

The whole house used to have the exterior facade of a mausoleum, which I’m guessing was probably torn down by the realtor. You can see the amazing exterior it in all it’s glory if you select an older street view on the google maps.

The kitsch factor was probably comparable to Pudgy Roberts’ house (I used to live down the street from him)— except his was completely covered in stuffed animals!

RIP to Mr Cuellar… couldn’t find a proper obituary, but my hope is the right buyer sees this or at least when the developer does the tear down they incorporate some of his props into the live/work condos. by @dronetheory

Very entertaining interview with visual artist and my sometimes musical conspirator KRK Ryden:

available pretty much wherever you stream podcasts…
Off The Easel episode 24: Double Talk

Older brother of Mark Ryden, he is known for his work for DEVO, the Yippie Party, his association with the Church of the Subgenius and is, as they say… huge in Japan!

You’ll hear how it all happened for this relentlessly freaky, high-powered futant when he began his art career after an ill-fated encounter with Walt Disney, as a child…

His next solo show is called Wet Bread… date to be announced. He’s just completed a huge piece (with a fur frame) called Tragedy Tomorrow, Comedy Tonight. It’s quite a magnum opus. I’m excited for his next project: a new release from his band Ken the Magic Corner God… which is something like the missing de-evolutionary link between the Residents and Negativeland. It will feature some keys by yours truly and may just signal the end of pop culture, when it’s all the Donald Duck people against all the Mickey Mouse people. Listen and see who’s side he’ll be on…
