Lots of sci-fi/fantasy, with occasional mystery or other genre fiction. Allergic to romance. Weirdly obsessed with Murderbot.

Thank you to everyone who helped me figure out how to do this. My conclusion is: I really need a shorter username šŸ˜‚

For DROP I used the first four Murderbot books. This…should probably be obvious šŸ˜…

For EVERYTHING I used some of my favorite Discworld books. Discworld will probably always be my literary true love, and it was hard to pick just 10 of them!

AND is fantasy: Nine Goblins by T Kingfisher, Tress of the Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson, and Penric’s Demon by Lois McMaster Bujold.

And READ is sci-fi: Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir, Night Watch on the Hinterlands by K Eason, To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis, and The Last Watch by JS Dewes.

I think this sums me up pretty well as a reader šŸ˜„

September wrap-up! It was TOUGH to pick a favorite book for September because I read some really great ones, as well as some books that are part of series I really enjoy.

Eventually I decided to go with The Ending Writes Itself. It was fast and fun and had lots of interesting twists that I didn’t see coming, and this is not surprising because VE Schwab is an excellent writer. Second place was Green City Wars, because what is Adrian Tchaikovsky doing, writing an animal-fantasy-solarpunk-dystopian-noir-detective novel? Seriously, is there anything this man cannot do?

October will be probably be a little more seasonal: expect some witches and ghosts, and probably something good for Banned Books Week. Looking forward to it! by @drop.everything.and.read

Yeah, I LOVED Green City Wars. Gritty detective noir novel with raccoon PI protagonist and pigeon reporter and cat antagonist and genius scientist mouse and warring squirrel armies? YES PLEASE.

One thing very interesting about this book is the setting: the animals are very much in a dystopian setting, but this is due to the humans on the periphery living in a beautiful solarpunk utopia, who have artificially created the animals to help run the city, whether the animals want to or not.

But anyway: I feel like you will appreciate this book most if you like detective noir, as opposed to anthropomorphic animal fantasy or dystopian sci-fi. Like, it *could* be any of those genres, but its structure and bones are noir.

But anyway, Adrian Tchaikovsky is very hit or miss for me, and Green City Wars was definitely a hit. Has anyone else read it? What did you think?

(And the second slide is my own animals, who are in no way capable of running a city but who CAN accurately show me which drawer the treats are in šŸ˜†) by @drop.everything.and.read

Death on the Lanai was just like watching an episode of The Golden Girls, in the best way. It’s fun and cozy and all of the characters feel just like themselves. Also, there’s another character who’s clearly a Temu Hercule Poirot (his initials are even HP) and it was so fun seeing what Poirot references would pop up.

The mystery itself was also good: there were plenty of suspects and the solution made sense with the clues, although it wasn’t immediately obvious either.

The first book, Murder By Cheesecake, featured Rose heavily, and Death on the Lanai was a Blanche story, so maybe we’ll get two more books in this series and have a Dorothy and a Sophia story? I sure hope so! by @drop.everything.and.read

#MurderbotMonday announcement! Apparently @cosmiclighthousecomics2025 is doing a graphic novel of All Systems Red! Sounds like it’s going to be a Kickstarter, but I don’t know when it’s going to be launched.

Personally I cannot wait to see our Murderbot friends in graphic novel form! I’ve really enjoyed some fan-made Murderbot webcomics, so I have high hopes for this!

Also, it says it includes a new Martha Wells short story. What’s our prediction: something NEW new, or something that’s never been included in a book, like Compulsory? I’m fine with either one šŸ˜ by @drop.everything.and.read

So, I knew I had to read After the Fall by Ed Ashton next, because I just listened to Green City Wars, which was narrated by @john.pirhalla and he did an absolutely phenomenal job, and I realized he also read After the Fall, which was on my TBR, and since I was in the mood to listen to him for a while longer, here we are. *whew*

Anyway! After the Fall has a pretty classic sci-fi setup of ā€œwhat if humans were pets for aliens?ā€ Our main character, John, is a little bit of a naive doofus, but his alien owner is also a bit of a doof, so honestly they’re a pretty good match.

There’s another ā€œpet humanā€ character who is supposed to be about 12, but she reads much older than that, maybe 16 or 17. And now they’re all going on a trip into the woods to renovate an old abandoned inn. So this feels like it’s the start to either a cozy fantasy or a horror novel, but hopefully it’s neither šŸ˜† but I’ll let you know how it goes! by @drop.everything.and.read

Yay, another Golden Girls mystery! I loved the first one (Murder By Cheesecake) and so far I’m really enjoying Death on the Lanai too.

I mean, this is exactly what you would expect: very light, very fluffy, lots of humor, all the characters acting just like you remember them. These books are the coziest of cozy mysteries. Basically, if you put mystery novels on a spectrum, Scandinavian noir would be at one end and the Golden Girls mysteries would be at the other end.

Is this shaping up to be a ground-shaking work of literature? No, but I’m reading a few chapters before bed every evening and it’s doing an excellent job of being a bedtime book 🄰 by @drop.everything.and.read

I’m about halfway through Green City Wars by Adrian Tchaikovsky and it is WEIRD but also FUN.

What if Mickey Spillane wrote Redwall? What if Rocket Raccoon visited Zootopia? I don’t even know what to call the genre: gritty detective mystery in a futuristic sci-fi dystopian setting with fantasy talking animal characters.

Fortunately, I like all of these things? So I’m having a great time reading about a raccoon detective solving a case in the gritty underbelly world of animal genetic tinkering. But friends, seriously: this book is SO DEEPLY WEIRD šŸ˜‚

Please tell me someone else has read this one. I need to know what you thought of it, because what even. by @drop.everything.and.read

Okay, so you know that Guy Ritchie movie from 2000 with Brad Pitt? (I don’t want to say the name because I think it might make the algo mad, but you know the one I mean.) That’s what Sister Svangerd and the Not Quite Dead reminds me of.

Like, think of the movie: it’s fast and violent and funny and very elaborate, and our two main characters keep just bumbling into things. And this books just feels like someone decided to send Turkish and Tommy to the First Ecumenical Council in Rome in AD 325, with just a hint of Good Omens thrown in for good measure.

This book contains:
šŸ’€family trauma by way of zombies
šŸ’€an atheist who is actively beefing with an angel
šŸ’€death by bell tower
šŸ’€a head in a box
šŸ’€more church schisms than you can shake a thurible at

Basically: if you’ve never read KJ Parker, go read Inside Man to see if you like his style and vibe. If you’ve already read some KJ Parker, then this book is exactly what you’re expecting it to be. by @drop.everything.and.read

I just wasn’t a huge fan of The Wishing Game. Possibly this is because I just finished reading The Ending Writes Itself, about a bunch of people who gather on an author’s private island to compete for a price and then get murdered, and this book is about a bunch of people who gather on an author’s private island to compete for a prize and do NOT get murdered. As a result, The Wishing Game felt almost unbearably twee to me.

Basically, it felt like someone wanted to write a TJ Klune book but couldn’t quite find the line between ā€œsweetly heartfeltā€ and ā€œoverwhelmingly saccharineā€.

Also, I hated the main character. She’s spent 20 years resenting her older sister for being sick when they were kids, and now it turned out her sister was being victimized by their parents the whole time. She’s supposed to be 26, so why does she feel like a dramatic 16 year old?

I don’t know, maybe this book would have been better if all the characters were aged down a little and it had been a YA book. I had been planning to read the author’s next book, The Book Witch, this autumn, but now I think I’ll take a pass on that for a while. by @drop.everything.and.read
