Guess who’s back at DCB? Only our mate @robinince1969 !! Expect the unexpected, a night of tangents, jokes, facts, fictions, poems, answers to questions you didn’t ask and questions without answers. Fun guaranteed.

📅 Date: 4th November 2026

DOORS- 6.30pm

EVENT START - 7:00pm

📍 Venue: Drop City Books, 74-78 Piccadilly, Hanley, ST1 1HX

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

We’re very excited to welcome Robin Ince back to DCB to celebrate the launch of his new book The Future of Jokes , Robin Ince is, a comedian, broadcaster, author, and bibliomaniac,. He’s a friend to bookshops and weirdos and a populariser of scientific ideas. If you’ve never seen Robin speak before expect a night of gorgeous tangents, unexpected segways and the warm, inclusive vibe that makes you feel like actually it might all be ok.

ABOUT THE BOOK

When did laughter become part of our universe? Were we the first planet to have a sense of humour? What was the first joke? Was it made by a chimpanzee or a crow? These are just a few of the questions comedian Robin Ince considers in The Future of Jokes, bringing in elements from science, technology, politics, philosophy and culture to probe just why we need jokes. What can they teach us about ourselves and our future? Comedy means different things to different people: it can be an act of rebellion, and it can be an act of reinforcing the status quo. It can be expression and it can be repression.

You’ll like this if you like -

Excitable fizzy brained people
Asking why about absolutely everything
Pub quiz facts to take home in your pocket.

“a witty and thoughtful short read on the importance of jokes and humour, and a romp through the comic landscape of the past, present, and possible future.”
Logan Murray, comedian and author of Get Started in Stand-Up Comedy

‘Do we really need another book about the mechanics of jokes? If that book is written by Robin Ince, yes. This is a spiky, refreshing, original, characteristically thoughful canter through the field of joking, and how and why we do it.’

Stoke on Trent let’s talk about drugs!! Good drugs, bad drugs, the line between criminal drugs and commercial drugs that shifts all the time. Who gets punished, who profits? Join us to discuss this and more with author and professor Kojo Koram.

📅 Date: 12th NOVEMBER 2026
DOORS - 6.30pm
EVENT START - 7:00pm
📍 Venue: Drop City Books, 74-78 Piccadilly, Hanley, ST1 1HX
⚡️NOTE THIS TICKET DOES NOT INCLUDE A COPY OF THE BOOK

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Kojo Koram is an author and Professor, teaching at the School of Law at Loughborough University. Born in Accra, Ghana and raised on Merseyside, he is now based in London. In addition to his academic writing, he has written for the New Statesman, Guardian and New York Times. He is the author of Uncommon Wealth: Britain and the Aftermath of Empire (John Murray, 2022). His first book won the English PEN Hessell-Tiltman Prize, was shortlisted for the Orwell Prize for Political Writing and the Bread and Roses Award for Radical Publishing and was chosen as a Guardian book of the year.
ABOUT THE BOOK
In The Next Fix, award-winning author and academic Kojo Koram travels from Scotland to Colombia, Ghana to the United States, to uncover the forces reshaping the global drug landscape. Moving between glossy corporate cannabis expos to grassroots activist campaigns and the question of reparations, he traces the growing tension between movements fighting for justice after decades of prohibition and the finance-world race to profit from a newly legal frontier. Will drug reform finally undo the racial violence, environmental destruction and public health failures of the War on Drugs? Or will it simply open a new chapter in global capitalism, creating a smooth transition from cartel barons to Wall Street oligopolies?
Urgent, moving and deeply reported, The Next Fix asks whether the War on Drugs is really over – or merely changing its chemical formula.

“Kojo’s case is clear and to my mind irrefutable”

When I first started planning this podcast series I decided that the only bookseller I wanted to speak to was Ruth Wallbank-Hughes, the founder of @dropcitybooks, a community-focused book shop in my home city of Stoke-on-Trent.

I was expecting a lively, interesting conversation about how booksellers make decisions about the books they stock. I *wasn't* expecting to feel as emotional as I do about it.

Stoke is one of those places often described using that horrible, reductive phrase, ‘left behind’.

It tends to only appear in the headlines when there are riots, or hate-fuelled right wing protests, or when it’s been voted as the worst place in the country to live. In the months and years following the EU referendum in 2016, journalists would only make the trip to Stoke to ask why so many people voted Leave, and in the 2019 General Election the city did its bit to obliterate the Red Wall when all three of its parliamentary constituency seats turned blue.

When you’re a left wing progressive who believes in class solidarity, who celebrates and welcomes difference and diversity, who thinks immigration strengthens a country, who is married to a Nigerian, and who has two brown children, it’s… complicated to call Stoke home.

But I’m also proud of my home city - of its heritage and its history, of its spirit, it's humour and its unique accent.

For me, DCB feels like hope and light and belief things can be better. What Ruth has created in 'the centre of the known universe' feels like all the best parts of my home city rolled into one.

I left in order to grow and thrive. She stayed and created something beautiful. I admire that so much.

I hope you enjoy this episode ❤️ Please share it far and wide ❤️ by @dropcitybooks

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Jonas Marvin is a writer, researcher and organiser based in Stoke on Trent. He co-hosts the Life of the Party podcast and blogs at Marx’s Dream Journal. He is a rare combination of really clever, really kind and really brave. When he says change is possible we believe him. We are delighted to host Jonas at Drop City Books for the massive celebration of his book that he deserves.

ABOUT THE BOOK
After a decades-long absence, class is once again central to our understanding of ailing Britain. But what does it mean to be working class today? Retelling the story of the working class over the last forty years — from Thatcher’s war against the unions to New Labour neoliberalism – Marvin shows how power and capital have combined to shatter a radical identity into many parts: white, male, northerner, homeowner, immigrant, unemployed, disabled. These fragments are then set in conflict against each other. Blending political analysis with an account of his own experiences of class in London and the rustbelt Midlands, Marvin shows how the working class have been demonised and organised for abandonment. The Breaking of the English Working Class tries to understand experiences of class today so that we can transcend class altogether tomorrow. taken in Cultural Quarter Hanley by @dropcitybooks
