Is your self-tanner actually safe?
New York Magazine’s The Strategist just asked me.
The short answer: after decades of widespread use, we haven’t seen convincing evidence that self-tanners increase skin-cancer risk. Real UV exposure is another story — the evidence against it is overwhelming, for both your health and your skin’s appearance.

Brown spots on the face are common, but they are not all the same. Sun spots, melasma, post inflammatory pigmentation, and seborrheic keratoses each require a different laser strategy. The right wavelength, pulse duration, and energy settings matter. So does the diagnosis - is it safe to treat?

Laser treatments can safely and effectively lift unwanted pigment when the diagnosis is correct and the device is properly selected. When it is not, you risk worsening discoloration, scarring, rebound pigmentation, and medical complications.

My advice: never treat a brown spot without a proper evaluation. Choose a highly qualified, board certified dermatologist who understands laser physics, skin biology, and how to customize treatment for your skin type.

Healthy skin is not about chasing trends, it is about making informed decisions.

Remember how Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder were a thing? Then remember how Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder weren’t a thing? Since Johnny couldn’t get rid of his WINONA FOREVER tattoo (this was 1993) he allegedly had to surgically change it to WINO FOREVER.

Well, creative thinking is no longer required!

Ever since I appeared on Good Morning America earlier this year to discuss laser tattoo removal, people have been asking me for more details. Here are a few:

It’s important to remember that laser tattoo removal is a process, not a one-and-done treatment. Monthly sessions over the course of a year often yields the best results. (Though this is highly variable.)

The good news? This treatment can be pain-free. At our office, we inject lidocaine into the skin before treatment to ensure the patient’s comfort throughout the session. (Typically topical numbing cream alone doesn’t do the job.) And while 100% clearance isn’t always attainable, more than 90% clearance is common.

After a session, the treated area may be pink and a bit scabbed. This is normal and usually heals over the course of about a week. We ask patients to cover the treated area with Aquaphor or Vaseline and a bandage until completely healed.

When choosing someone to help you, remember that expertise matters. At our office, our approach to laser tattoo removal is rooted in our own clinical trials, original research papers, years of experience, and board certification in dermatology. Trust your skin to an expert for the best and safest outcomes.
