Getting the ride I wanted at the Mega Mid South -
After a couple years of ultra dreams getting checked by other realities and life ambitions.
Climbing Brethren Hill, I knew going in, would set the tone for the ride so I was determined not to put my foot down.
Thank you to Will Moss @fartherbagco for capturing the moment I made good on that small goal that gave me gas for my goal of finishing the route in under 30 hours.
After a long, cold night on familiar roads made strange my new hardened ruts and washouts and all the variables that make gravel riding great, I finished with a time of 29 hours and 13 minutes.
I crashed a couple times. The first time I could laugh it off, but less so the second time I destroyed some beloved layers of mine (RIP @ridewithringtail) and put a gnarly gash in my elbow that I didn’t want to look at.
I almost crashed again - into a massive heifer posted up in the middle of the road - around 4am before making Morrison. I mistook its black rump for a puddle or shadow in the road until my headlight and eyes found its white face feet from mine. My eyes widened so much from the shock that they ached afterwards. When the sun finally came up, after riding a handful of miles by starlight when my electronics failed, I realized that my left cornea had frosted over, and I was relieved when that gradually cleared up on the brighter miles back to Stillwater.
The whole time I made good on some advice Rusty (@brownmanra ) once gave me. I thanked and spoke to every animal that let me see it, and I saw more and more as I did.
I even thanked that damned heifer, and then I saw a bobcat.

Thank you to @unlearnpavement @painpatina @getwide @midsouthgravel and the extended @districtbicycles family for making this experience possible.

Thank you to @sincerecycles @mikechappy_ @racemetalbikes for making the trip from Santa Fe to ride with us in Stillwater. Bailey, I really valued that time to reconnect in person.

@the_bells_of_old_bailey thank you for all your help picking up the pieces and cleaning up when the thing is done - an endurance event for the rider’s family.

Finally, thank you to my @surlybikes Krampus for being so long my go-to bike by @drsethwood

If you’ve found yourself wondering “what even is worth celebrating right now?”, here’s an answer: riding bikes. That’s one of the most unarguably true things we learned while writing this book. It almost cannot be bad to ride a bike. Combine that with with learning about the history of Oklahoma’s Black Towns - which is also inarguably worth celebrating - and you have a pretty great day. Thank you to Osborne Celestain, The Community Light, the Major Taylor Cycling Club, and especially the folks who hosted riders in Tullahassee, Red Bird, Taft, Summit, and Rentiesville, for putting the event on. If you register for it next year, you can be sure that your reg money is going TO those towns, so you get to contribute to their continuing history. by @drsethwood

Dawn patrol with Lester - over caffeinated and without a firm plan, we made a banger of a short route that rode like Payne County’s greatest hits 📍👇

Washington (south) > 92nd (west) > Cottonwood (north) > 68th (east) > Range (south) > 56th (east) > Washington (north) taken in Payne County by @drsethwood

It’s Ariel’s birthday today! Help me celebrate the brilliant, talented, loving, kind, and beautiful person she is in all her walks of life: mother, friend, reader, writer, sewer, knitter, creature adventurer, cultivator of tea hands, and so many other roles she graces. “Who would object to such a partner?” I am honored to still be on her dance card after so many good and hard times. by @drsethwood
