Myles would have been 23 today.

“Echo” by Christina Rossetti

Come to me in the silence of the night;
 Come in the speaking silence of a dream;
Come with soft rounded cheeks and eyes as bright
  As sunlight on a stream;
 Come back in tears,
O memory, hope, love of finished years.

Oh dream how sweet, too sweet, too bitter sweet,
 Whose wakening should have been in Paradise,
Where souls brimfull of love abide and meet;
 Where thirsting longing eyes
  Watch the slow door
That opening, letting in, lets out no more.

Yet come to me in dreams, that I may live
  My very life again tho’ cold in death:
Come back to me in dreams, that I may give
  Pulse for pulse, breath for breath:
 Speak low, lean low,
As long ago, my love, how long ago. by @drsingalittle

This was a deep, unique loss.

Mr. Claxton was my voice teacher at Mississippi College, and I would not be the Me that I am now without him. There is not an aspect of what I do as a singer, as a teacher, and frankly as a human being that is not seasoned with his words, wisdom, and example. He was one in a million, and all of us were better for having shared time with him.

1. A group photo after a surprise concert for his 80th Birthday in 2015.

2. In 2017, Mr. Claxton and I gave a recital at his retirement home, and he treated me and Anne to one of the best steaks I’ve ever had, at the legendary Doe’s Eat Place.

3. One of the only recordings of Mr. Claxton I know of. From James Sclater’s song cycle “Songs of Time and Passing,” based on the poems of Emily Dickinson. (Dr. Sclater was my Theory & Composition professor at MC.) After the recital and meal, we sat outside and talked for hours, which for me was the highlight of that trip.

4. We opened the recital with “Total Eclipse” from Handel’s “Samson.” Mr. Claxton was playing from an old score which he’d inherited from his teacher. His teacher had inherited it from *his* teacher, Jean de Reszke, one of the early stars of the Metropolitan Opera. What I found interesting is that de Reszke called for the piano part to be played much more Romantically, using the pedal and doubling bass notes and whatnot. I liked it, and wouldn’t mind hearing that from time to time nowadays!

5. The Delta sunset we got to enjoy that late summer evening. Godspeed, Mr. Claxton.

Time does go on --
I tell it gay to those who suffer now --
They shall survive --
There is a sun --
They don't believe it now -- taken in Greenville, Mississippi by @drsingalittle

Taking Myles on this “Go West, Young Man” road trip was the first time I ever heard this reserved young man use the adjective “awesome.” Repeatedly. Summer 2014.

1. Hiking in the Sandia Mountains (Albuquerque, NM). “Sandia” means “watermelon,” and that’s the color of this range at sunset. A must-see.

2. On the South Rim of The Grand Canyon. (Yes that’s him, alone at the edge.)

3. Preparing to float-swim in The Great Salt Lake, off the northern coast of Antelope Island- which is an awesome island about the size of Manhattan and home to over 600 bison.

4. Hiking up from Jenny Lake, with the incomparable Grand Tetons standing guard (he’s also in this one, if you zoom in).

5-6. Souvenirs that I now feel slightly guilty about having, but it’s done and I’m sure the statute of limitations has expired. Right? taken in The American West by @drsingalittle

Now you understand
Just why my head’s not bowed.
I don’t shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
When you see me passing,
It ought to make you proud.
I say,
It’s in the click of my heels,
The bend of my hair,
the palm of my hand,
The need for my care.
’Cause I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

I often wonder if we singers don’t spend enough time with what Baldwin says here. We all have our tricks and gimmicks, and the temptation to hide behind them is real. But what really moves us in all of the Arts is this: unobstructed representation of the complexities of life, things like Truth and Love and Beauty and Loss. And that moves us because it makes us realize that, on some level, we have felt and experienced all the things that every other human has felt and experienced.

That reality of connection... that’s the beginning of Empathy and Humanity.

This brief, dramatic shot comes near the end of S1 E2 of “True Detective.” For various reasons, it has come to my mind many times over the years. The juxtaposition of a weak, derelict religious structure against a strong, raging industry. A juxtaposition that, because of the forced focus on the church, can easily go unnoticed. There are a thousand directions you could take this... I’ll just say: I think it’s a brilliant shot, from an obviously genius creative team.

This past week we wrapped up the Fall semester at Stony Brook. I could not be more impressed by this group! Their resilience, character, and deep joy of music-making shone through every single moment. I thought, as many probably did, that internet voice lessons would lead to “Zoom fatigue,” and that it would be hard to accomplish what we could in the traditional in-person format, but these amazing artists proved that wrong. Week after week, they brought their best efforts, and I am left inspired and encouraged, and with a renewed love of this art form and the people that comprise it.

To @mada_chen, @michaelchengmanwai , @musicoalex , @nicolekarrs, @morganmanifacier, and @heidischneids... Thank You all for being outstanding people, scholars (1 Master’s and 5 Doctoral), and artists!

I am so thankful for this wonderful group, the only group like it in the world. The ABSURD amount of talent in this 80-member ensemble of soloists blows me away every day that I walk into work.
.

I am thankful that on this day in 2018, an entire roomful of artists, including the amazing @pianohowie didn’t bat an eye when I asked if they’d perform a 90th “Happy Birthday” to send to my Nanna. Not only that, but my original request was to just pull a few guys aside and do it. They said, “We can do better than that, she deserves the full treatment.” I FaceTime’d with her when she watched it, and saw a strong pillar-of-her-community woman turn speechless and shed tears at this generous gesture of strangers.
.

I have gone back and watched this video dozens of times since that day, and have realized in countless ways that it’s the community of artists, those choosing to be fountains instead of drains, giving, challenging, and growing together, that repeatedly makes me thankful that my path led where it did.
.

@metoperachorus I can’t wait to make music with you again

I couldn’t be more THRILLED and HONORED to be joining the Music Faculty at Stony Brook University in the Fall Semester of 2020! Having taken a sabbatical from the Met to complete my doctorate at SBU, this school is very near and dear to my heart, and I cannot speak highly enough about my experience there. I’ll be teaching voice to graduate vocal performance majors (MM and DMA) alongside my friend and mentor, soprano Brenda Harris. DM me if you have questions about the school and/or degree programs!

The Department of Music is proud to announce the appointment of two new faculty members: João Luiz Rezende Lopes, guitar, and Jeremy Little, opera and voice.

Two time Latin Grammy nominee guitarist, educator, and composer João Luiz, began to play the popular music of his native Brazil professionally during his childhood and was later trained in classical guitar by his mentor Henrique Pinto. Winner of the 2006 Concert Artists Guild Competition as a member of the critically acclaimed Brasil Guitar Duo, João has performed extensively in the United States, Asia, Europe and Latin America. His versatility led him to be chosen to collaborate with Yo-Yo Ma and Carlos Prieto on a project to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Cuban composer Leo Brouwer in a landmark concert in Cuba in 2014. João is also the director of chamber music at CUNY Hunter College and the head of the guitar at SUNY Purchase.

Jeremy Little is a graduate of Louisiana State University, The Juilliard School, and Stony Brook University, and debuted as a principal artist with the Met in 2007. Prior to joining the Met chorus in 2008, Jeremy was a principal artist with New York City Opera, Wolf Trap Opera, Florentine Opera, and Des Moines Metro Opera, and performed as a featured soloist at Carnegie Hall and with New York Festival of Song in NYC and Washington, DC. Jeremy was on the Grammy-nominated live recording of Musto’s Volpone.
