🚨 Big baby doesn’t always mean healthy baby.

Accelerated fetal growth—when a baby is growing faster than expected—can sometimes be associated with pregnancy complications and adverse outcomes.

It may be linked to conditions such as gestational diabetes, maternal diabetes, or excess fetal growth, and it can increase the risk of complications including:
• Shoulder dystocia
• Birth injury
• Cesarean delivery
• Difficult or complicated delivery

But here’s the important part: growth is more than just a number on an ultrasound. 📈

Your MFM/OB team looks at your baby’s growth pattern, your medical history, blood sugar levels, fluid levels, and other factors to determine what it means for your pregnancy.

👩🏾‍⚕️ A bigger baby isn’t automatically a problem—but accelerated growth deserves attention and individualized care.

Talk with your OB or MFM about what your baby’s growth measurements mean for you 🫶🏾 by @drsolita

MFM lunch break: a rare sighting. 😂🍽️

We don’t always get lunch… so when we do, WE EAT. 😂

Is the food always amazing? Absolutely not.
Is it often edible? Probably. 😂

But when you’ve been running from consult to consult, a 10-minute meal feels like a five-star experience. 👩🏾‍⚕️💨🍴

YOUR OB: “I am sending you to see Maternal-Fetal Medicine.”

Those words can send a pregnant woman straight to Google—and straight to the worst-case scenario. 😩

But an MFM referral does NOT automatically mean something is wrong with you or your baby.

Sometimes we’re involved because of a medical condition, a previous pregnancy complication, an ultrasound finding, genetic screening, concerns about growth—or simply because your pregnancy deserves a little extra monitoring.

And remember: our job isn’t just to find problems. It’s also to provide reassurance when things look good. ❤️

If you’ve been referred to MFM, take a breath. You’re not alone—and you have another expert in your corner.

High-risk does not mean hopeless.

Save this for yourself or share it with someone who needs the reminder. 🫶🏾

🚨 WAIT… YOUR CERVIX CAN OPEN BEFORE YOU FEEL ANYTHING?!

Yes. And this is something I want every pregnant woman to know.

Cervical insufficiency occurs when the cervix begins to shorten or open too early in pregnancy—sometimes without contractions or significant pain.

If you have a history that puts you at increased risk, your OB or MFM may recommend transvaginal cervical-length measurements every 1–2 weeks, starting around 16 weeks, to monitor for changes.

If a short cervix is identified, treatment may include vaginal progesterone and/or a cerclage (cervical stitch) depending on your individual history, gestational age, cervical findings, and overall pregnancy.

And please remember:
A previous pregnancy loss does NOT mean your next pregnancy will have the same outcome. ❤️

As an MFM, my goal is to identify risk early, monitor closely, and develop a plan that is right for YOU and your pregnancy.

👩🏾‍⚕️ Discuss your situation with your OB or MFM to develop your individualized plan.

Save this post and share it with an expecting mama who needs to know. 🫶🏾

BUT GOD. 🙏🏾🤎

She was told she couldn’t get pregnant. The odds didn’t look good. The future she hoped for seemed impossible.

And then… here I am, looking at her baby on ultrasound. 🥹👶🏾✨

As an MFM, I get the incredible privilege of witnessing moments like this—moments that remind us that sometimes the story isn’t over just because someone says it is.

I don’t know what you’ve been told is impossible in your life, but I hope this reminds you to leave room for God to surprise you. 🙏🏾

What feels impossible to us is never too difficult for God. 🤍

Sometimes having Mom, Grandma, or another family member help with the medical history is SO helpful—especially when they remember details the patient may not! 😂

But every now and then…

Me: “Can you tell me about HER pregnancy history?”

Mom: “Absolutely! So when I was pregnant with her…” 👀😂

And suddenly, we’ve gone from a 30-minute MFM visit to a full review of Mom’s OB history from 1994. 😭💀

Family members can be an amazing resource, but just remember… today’s patient is the patient. 😂❤️

Just so we’re clear: 👀🫶🏾

Because sometimes “late” isn’t the whole story.

Maybe there’s no MFM in their community.
Maybe they had to take time off work.
Maybe childcare was a struggle.
Maybe they drove hours because the care they need simply isn’t available where they live.

As physicians, we have to see the person behind the appointment time.

Accountability matters.
But so does compassion. Context. And access to care.

Maternal health equity means meeting patients where they are. ❤️

Cerclage: When Pregnancy Needs a Little Extra Support 💕

A cerclage is a procedure used during pregnancy to help keep the cervix closed when there is a risk of cervical shortening or opening too early.

Think of it as a stitch that provides extra support to the cervix—helping give baby more time to grow and develop. 🧵👶🏽

Cerclage may be recommended based on your pregnancy history (for example, history of preterm birth), cervical length (usually measured at the anatomy scan and should be more than 2.5 cm). It’s not right for everyone, but for the right patient, it can be an important tool in preventing an early delivery.

✨ The goal? More time. More growth. More hope.

If you’ve been told you may need a cerclage, talk with your OB/GYN or Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist about what it means for your pregnancy.
