We had a wonderful day at @minehead_bay_festival, block printing with the lovely @drukasmaija 🦋

🦌We printed over 70 flags in response to Maija’s Exmoor Wildlife Project, which will become part of a big collective patchwork!

There’s loads more drop-in printmaking to look forward to throughout October half term. Keep an eye out on our website and Instagram for more info. taken in Minehead by @drukasmaija

If you’ve visited Exmoor, you’ve most likely seen herds of Exmoor Ponies grazing on the moorland. This breed incredibly is resilient and has faced hardships and near extinction after WW2. The Moorland Mousie Trust not only educates the public and supports breeders but rescues and rehabilitates ponies who wouldn’t have anywhere else to go. There are around 20 different herds grazing on Exmoor National Park, each is identified but the unique markings on their quarters. A huge thank you to the ladies at the Trust who imparted so much knowledge as well as letting me meet, photograph, and sketch the ponies.

The Two Moors Project is working to reintroduce the Pine Marten to Dartmoor and Exmoor. I had the pleasure of speaking to Lucie Bennett who is helping to facilitate the reintroduction in Exmoor and learnt about both the project and the unique qualities of the solitary and playful Pine Marten.

These beautiful creatures are incredibly shy and territorial, each has a unique set of markings on it bib which helps to identify individuals.

Teaching full-time in the UK hasn’t left me with much creative energy for printmaking over the last few years but I’ve been lucky enough to start work on a project for the Minehead and Coast DevelopmentTrust and @minehead_bay_festival to develop some large-scale flags that celebrate the unique facets of the Exmoor wildlife and countryside. I’ve also had the privilege to meet with local wildlife experts and received support and guidance from some truly remarkable people and organisations who are performing incredible work directing projects to preserve the beautiful wildlife and environment in and around Exmoor.

These draft images are currently just in the planning stage while I work on positives to develop large scale screen prints for the flags. The Yeth Hounds are based on the beautiful Exmoor Lurchers which are working companion dogs bred by @janefarthing who took over from her father who started breeding in the 1960’s. Jane holds a lot of love and care for both the dogs, and the stunning environment that is home for her on the moors in Exmoor.

Loving the challenge, and encountering many mistakes and technical issues with the prints which are each a four-piece jigsaw, plus I’m new to printing on wriggly fabric!
