Why is the glass called a Nick and Nora?

A Nick & Nora glass is named after Nick and Nora Charles, the famous fictional detective couple from the 1934 novel and film The Thin Man.

The Origin of the Name

The Characters: Nick and Nora Charles were known for their sharp banter and a constant love for drinking icy martinis together on screen.

The Inspiration: In 1987, legendary bartender Dale DeGroff was reviving classic pre-Prohibition drinks at the Rainbow Room in New York City.

The Glass Selection: He wanted a delicate, small, rounded glass like the ones the characters used in the old films, rather than the large, spill-prone V-shaped martini glasses popular in the 1980s. He nicknamed the retro glassware after the famous duo.

This Halloween, we’re going back to the days of Prohibition.

On October 31st, the Drum Distilling Co tasting room is becoming the Blue Light Dancehall. Turning into a night of bootleggers, gangsters, flappers and old-school Halloween fun. Get dressed up, bring your friends and come ready for a night of live music and dancing.

Garrett Gregory will be taking the stage at 8:30 PM, so settle in, grab a drink and get ready to dance the night away.

Tickets are $20 and include your own serving of chips and salsa.

Akvavit, Scandinavia's Ancestral Spirit

Akvavit, or “water of life,” was first created during the 15th century by monks as a medicine comprised of secret botanical blends, soaked and distilled into a clear spirit and believed to have mystical properties. After being used for over a century to treat both physical and spiritual ailments, Akvavit’s alleged healing benefits were eventually dismissed as superstition and the spirit migrated from apothecaries to dinner tables. Swedish families and friends raised tiny shot glasses overflowing with the chilled spirit in celebration of life, health and happiness. To this day, no festivity is complete without it.

Akvavit is a botanical spirit, similar to gin, but with different regional flavors. Caraway and dill are the lead botanicals in all akvavits, but many other botanicals like anise, angelica, orris, elderflower, fennel seed, cumin, cardamom and citrus peels are used in akvavit. The neutral base spirit, flavors and process employed by each distiller are determined by their country’s set of legal standards. Some countries have different spelling and pronunciation for the spirit in their local language. All are correct, with “aquavit” as the generally recognized global spelling for the category.

And it's not just for shots, although that is the traditional method it's drank. It is also an excellent substitute in caesars, martinis, and mules. Come by the tasting room to try ours today
