Super big fun Surreal Deal gig yesterday at the Wayside 45 with special guest Dave Easley! True to form, Dave’s playing was intergalactic. Thanks to everyone who made the trip down to support Dave and the band! Thank you Jimmie Meyers for sparing us the insane task of mixing from the stage. Hope to see you all September 6 at Alto Vineyards! by @drumhighway

Peaks and valleys

I’m laying in bed with stomach issues I’ve had for the last five days. I finally went to the doctor this morning and they ran some tests. I was momentarily annoyed when I realized the results could take a week or two. That won’t actually help me get through my gigs this weekend. But I caught myself and realized if there was something really terrible happening I would’ve gone to a hospital, I had a hospital to go to, and although I’m pretty uncomfortable, I’ll get through the weekend. If I have to stop the band to run to the bathroom, it’ll be a good story.

The main thing that hit me as I was laying in bed trying to nap for a couple more hours was an overwhelming feeling that I had before I got sober - I remember laying in bed just like this, but I would still be drunk or massively hung over thinking if I could just get a couple more hours of sleep before I have to get up and battle through a horrible hangover or knowing I needed to drink more to get through the day. I haven’t had a drink in a long time and it’s amazing the guilt and shame that can be brought up in moments like this. I’ve had strange feelings of depression or guilt when I’ve been sick and laying in bed, but the clarity of where this came from had never been there before. Grateful to just be sick today. I’m doing fine.

I went to see Young Washington yesterday. I knew a lot of his pre revolutionary war history, but it was interesting to see it on film and I thought they did a nice job. The theater was surprisingly full. Mostly me and a lot of older folks. But now that I think about it, maybe I am older folks, too. Damn. As far as presidents go, George Washington has always been my guy. If you had to pick a first president, Washington wasn’t a bad place to start. He sure had a lot of faults, but I think he was very self-aware. A very much forward thinker and although he certainly had ambition, definitely made some selfless decisions that reflected his ability to be conscious of, and protective of the future. Anyway, I liked the movie. by @drumhighway

A photo from a few years back when I started playing soccer. Years later, it remains my favorite sport and as much as I hate the controversy around FIFA and the World Cup, it is inspiring to see countries come together for a global event with a reasonable amount of harmony. And the US is playing surprisingly well! #whodathunkit #notmusic #worldcup2026 by @drumhighway

Train to Ortesei

With minor stress, I found the train platform departing Munich for Ortesei, Italy. Paranoid I would not find my way, I arrived unreasonably early powered by a double espresso. Turns out I was not totally unreasonable - they don’t post the time and platform numbers until less an hour before the train leaves. Fortunately, I found it in the train app. My concept of ‘on time’ is a hour early, left a few minutes to walk the station and get a feel for the platform layout since I have 9 minutes to make my connecting train on my return.

I found my seat and settled in. A window seat facing the direction the train moves offers a remarkably good chance of my not throwing up. After a wonderful week in Austria and Germany, a beautiful train ride thorough the Alps to Italy would finally give me a chance to organize my thoughts and make a few notes about what just happened.

A plan quickly foiled by an Italian soccer team of 11 year olds from Cesena who’d just won a tournament in Munich. They conquered the train in seconds. Other passengers were no match for the energy of these youthful champions. I was engulfed in celebration featuring banging, slamming, laughing, and screaming. Impossible not to be swept up in their joy and after a minor moment of aggravation realized I received a perfect introduction to Italy.

One of the coaches seated across from me was kind enough to turn his computer so I could view as he showed his players video from the tournament over the weekend. After, pointing to their trophy on the table across the isle I said “looks like they did pretty well.” He said “they won” I smiled in approval and he finished with “it’s not me. They are very good.”

That wasn’t difficult to believe from the video. I watched an 11 year-old cut through four players spinning and turning before popping a perfect finish in the upper right hand corner. Premier League level. These kids are going somewhere. If I knew what their names were, I’d write them down because I have a feeling we’ll be hearing from a few of them down the road.

Big fun playing with Surreal Deal at Friday Night Live last night. In all honesty, not our best performance, but that’s OK too. It was a beautiful night and wonderful to see so many familiar faces. Special thanks to Ron Phelps for making us sound good anyway. And what a treat to see our good friend Zack! Zack was at our first gig back in 2006, I believe. I always joked that Zack has been to more Surreal Deal gigs than I have. Following our quick one hour set, which is usually our warm-up (Surreal Deal was built for long distance, not sprints) I had a chance to wander around and hear some of the other music, like Ryan Groff, who I’ve been making a lot of music with lately and having a blast doing it. Modern Drugs sounded fantastic. I don’t often partake in massive social situations because I find it a bit overwhelming. But with so many things in the world where I can find negativity, I truly enjoyed watching so many people enjoying themselves, laughing, having fun, and dancing. I mean, what else are we gonna do? by @drumhighway
