I’ve been riding mountain bicycles in this forest with this guy for coming up on a decade and a half. Squirrel Gap has always been one of his favorites and we’ve ridden it in the rain, in snow, and on perfect days like yesterday. It’s never been one of my personal favorites but it is undoubtedly a properly humbling raw, old-school Pisgah experience.
If you ask me the history of any trail in The Pisgah, chances are good that I can give you the history of that trail. Most trails originated as wagon roads (South Mills), logging rail (Farlow, Big Creek, Yellow Gap Road), or logging skids (Spencer Branch).
Squirrel Gap is not one of those trails. We don’t know where it came from or who exactly built it but we do know that when white people arrived to settle and later to extract timber on a commercial scale, it already existed. It is likely of megafaunal origin and used by the native people for hundreds of years. I consider it an immense honor to pass through the land along this corridor.
