he NYC FY27 Preliminary Budget leaves out funding for important programs that are currently benefiting thousands of NYC students and families, and are, therefore, at risk of being rolled back or eliminated as soon as this July unless city leaders act!.

Email Mayor Mamdani and City Council leaders and urge them to restore and provide long-term (“baselined”) funding for these important education programs.

We applaud the Mayor for vetoing Intro 175-B and standing firmly on the side of students, parents, and educators.

By vetoing Intro 175-B, the Mayor has taken an important step to protect students, educators, and school communities. Schools should be places of learning and expression, not zones of surveillance or suppression. More than 100 organizations and unions and thousands of New Yorkers came together in opposition, sending 25,136 letters to City Hall. The message was clear: protect our voices and the rights of our students, parents, and educators to gather and protest. City Council Members must now hold firm, vote no, and sustain the veto by @dsc_ny

Register to join DSC-NY next Monday at FIGHT THE POWER for a Free POL/ICE Free Schools Political Education session and dinner.

On April 27th from 5-7pm, the Dignity in Schools Campaign - NY (DSC-NY) will host a community political education session on deep organizing around POL/ICE Free Schools in New York City!

With the recent increased investment and weaponization of the police state against our young people, it is imperative we build safe and supportive alternatives to carcerality in both in our schools and communities. In this session we will host a teach-in on the history of police and ICE in NYC schools as well as how communities and organizers have created movements against the carceral forces that seek to suppress our young people.

We welcome youth, parents, advocates, and educators to join us in strategizing on how we continue this fight!

Share the flyer and register bit.ly/fightpowerpolicefree.

Where: NYIC - 131 W 33rd St, 10th Floor Conference, New York, NY 10001.
When: Monday, April 27th from 5-7pm
Who: Public school students, parents, educators, and advocates by @dsc_ny

NYC just passed two bills that could restrict where you’re allowed to protest, or even gather. But the fight isn’t over.

At a time when Trump and the far right are attacking dissent nationwide, New York City should be defending our rights, not rolling them back.

Intro 175-B would allow the NYPD to create broad “police perimeters” around schools and vaguely defined “educational” sites, expanding their power to limit protests, restrict gatherings, and increase policing.

That’s not safety. That’s censorship.

We’ve seen what this means: more NYPD discretion, less space for New Yorkers, especially Black, Brown, immigrant, LGBTQ, Muslim, Jewish, and young communities, to speak out.

Silencing protest doesn’t keep us safe.
It makes it harder to hold power accountable.

What’s next:
🚫 We need Mayor Mamdani to veto Int-0175B
🚫 And City Council must uphold that veto

Tomorrow, New York City Council is voting on bills that would give the NYPD broad power to push protests out of public space under the guise of combating hate. These “buffer zone” bills could be used to shut down the very gatherings where we come together to demand investment in our communities and exercise our First Amendment rights, all while expanding surveillance and overpolicing that already disproportionately impacts Black communities, immigrant families, and Black and Muslim New Yorkers.

At a moment when censorship and repression are rising across the country, these bills would hand even more discretion to armed officers to decide who gets to gather and be heard. We have always found ways to show up and speak out, and we need to be clear that OUR POWER IS NOT THEIRS TO TAKE.

Call your councilmember TODAY and tell them to vote NO on Intros 1-B and 175-A. Turn your sound on to hear a brave second grade student from PS 139 speak to why this matters 📢 taken in New York City Hall by @dsc_ny
