Jennifer and I are both rolling into 'cross season on new frames, built entirely by us!

Between us, we've got 22 gears too many for #sscxwc but with sliders, that'll be changing soon.

Learned a lot of lessons on mine (purple/pink fade) so Jennifer's is more refined. Both can run down to 415mm stays and turn on a dime. Front center *just* long enough to clear the toes.

Peep the last photo for my new favorite mantra and a sick top cap (@bentleycomponents)

Thanks to @firsthand.bike for the Reynolds tubes and hardware, as well as sweet powdering from @sdpcustomcoatings by @dstevensonpnw

Finally got around to the finish work on this! Third frame under my belt, but the first one designed from the ground up. Sliding dropouts, manipulating the stays at home, and geometry choices that stemmed from my own brain, not from expert advice or recreating the fit of another bike. Thinner tubes than before, too!

I was in a bit of a rush so while the joints are plenty strong, they're not the prettiest. That's just fine, as they'll spend a ton of time collecting mud!

Stoked for racing this for CX. As a gravel bike the BB is way too high with 700x48s. Going to see how I like it with 650x50s this weekend.

Now to patiently wait on flowing the frame saver around before I build this up by @dstevensonpnw

Something else fun coming soon!

Jennifer's dual purpose CX/Gravel race frameset is coming along!

It's much easier to get this all to work out with some nice Reynolds S bend stays from @firsthand.bike (As well as the rest of tubes in the lovely to work with and ride in Reynolds 631). Doing a similar bike with straight stays got *real weird*

415-435mm Chainstays using some Paragon flat mount sliders.
Room for the muddiest CX tire (or a 38-40 gravel tire) @415mm
Just enough room for a 50mm Schwalbe @427mmish and up, depending on how much paint you want to lose on the back of the seat tube.

42t will be *tight*
40t should be comfortable
And let's be real, we're in the PNW so it's probably getting a 38t anyway

One of these days I'll stop pushing the absolute limit of tire clearance at the expense of the tiniest margins at the drivetrain. Today is not the day, though.

The plate style sliders doing the lord's work for this build-- ~157mm C-C for the tabs.

Another shout out to @schonstudio for teaching us how to draft all this by hand. Much easier than trying to model bent and dimpled stays in CAD! by @dstevensonpnw

N.B.D!!!

Not new bike day, NEW BEAN DAY! Trying out a new supplier. Bigger quantities, lower prices, but no 1000 word flowery essay on what it tastes like or play by play roast recap, so more to learn.

3 roasts at the same % development time, but differing roast levels. City, City+, Full City or something like that.

Basically just the full spectrum of medium-- light medium, medium, and dark medium.

These beans are HUGE! Final shot is a washed Ethiopian, right is this new washed Nicaraguan. by @dstevensonpnw

Wow! What a month it's been in the shop with @nwbeachworks . This was tougher than anticipated! Without the same tools and guidance as we had in class with @schonstudio and instead working with almost all hand tools and a 30 year old jig (with no real headtube support?!?! 😵‍💫) we finally have this sweet road bike ready for @mailasubai. Have fun!!!!

After all that, though, there was no measurable front triangle misalignment, and only two slight adjustments to the chainstays to make this straighter than any bike in our house.

It's getting a Ritchey WCS fork and tidbits, with some awesome Velo Orange rim brakes. Excited to see what it looks like when it's coated and built. by @dstevensonpnw

Sky Islands Take 2!

Last month we finally got back to S AZ to do more of the Sky Islands Loop. We did the full perimeter instead of the buttcheek route, so we hit every part that we missed last time.

Unfortunately, we brought the rain with us. Soggy day 1, but awesome views with clouds! by @dstevensonpnw

Y'all ready for some truly unhinged and totally useless math?!?!?! Since I had to strip this rack for powder coating, and am also easily defeated by @voilemfg straps if I haven't had my morning coffee yet, I took the opportunity to install these strap keepers that I had laser cut from the @wzrd.bikes rack making files.

This little mod cost me 17.5g of extra weight. Purely mathematically, this might cost me 7.4 +/- 0.2 seconds*** (depending on how much food and water I'm carrying) on a 150 mile day with 15k' of climbing. Pretty meaningless seconds over long days. However, when you're just strapping shit to a rack, 7.2 seconds is actually a lot longer than it sounds. From fiddling with straps, it actually won't save much time, 5 seconds at best.

However, the mental load saved from my caffeine deprived brain that somehow always puts Voile straps on upside down? Priceless!!!

***Assuming a constant uphill grade, on a constant dirt road surface, at a constant low Z2 power output. So yeah, exactly like real life. 😉

Progress!!! Everything is aligned and brazed. Tacking on-frame was nerve wracking.

This is equally inspired by the Rat Tail and Tailfin racks (though I've never handled either). Rat Fin I guess?

By brazing joints instead of making this universal via hardware, it'll be stronger, simpler, and lighter. In fact, switching to this from my old rack will make up over half the difference in weight between my Ti Chumba and my new steel setup. by @dstevensonpnw

We're on the verge of WWIII (as the baddies) and I have to wait until 8AM Eastern tomorrow to learn the fate of the biggest project I've put together at my job that (we're only halfway through), so here's a practice miter from this evening while I distract myself. Firing up the torch tomorrow! by @dstevensonpnw

Some glamor shots of the new rig. Still dialing in. Ended up dropping the bar back to the 6cm saddle to bar drop that I run on my other bikes and tor a less hideous saddle.

2.4s are excellent. Jury is out on the 2.6s. it'll likely take a 2.8 in dry conditions for the next sand filled desert adventure.

UPS lost my Gasflux order, so haven't started on the racks yet. by @dstevensonpnw

It's done! At least I had time for two quick test rides before the @evergreen_gravel_racing 100 miles of shenanigans.

This is the frame I built with @schonstudio last month. She turned my unhinged ideas into geometry that is reasonable and rides like a road bike with giant tires. Other than 1-2 tacks, everything was cut, filed, brazed, filed, filed, filed, and filed by me!

Somehow this all came together with 2.4s, fenders, gravel Q/chainline, and no toe overlap. Hope it treats me well tomorrow!

Lots of fun @whiteind tidbits and an awesome @klite_dynamo_power light and charging setup to top it off. @sdpcustomcoatings did a sick finish (although Jennifer picked a much better color... Next bike will get a more ridiculous color)

Ride report coming next week, assuming I don't freeze to death! by @dstevensonpnw
