When I was a kid, my dad always drilled into me the importance of pride and character. He would look me in the eyes and ask, “Who are you when nobody is watching?” That question stuck. Was I someone I could be proud of?

Growing up, I saw where he got that mindset. My grandfather, Beto, was the kind of man who kept everything he touched in pristine condition. His garage looked like a showroom. His yard was manicured to perfection. He had a unique lawn mower, the same kind they use on golf course putting greens. Which made sense, because his backyard was a putting green for as long as I can remember.

As a kid, I thought it was just about chores, clean rooms, and cutting grass. But as I got older, I realized it was something deeper. Take pride in your work. Do it so well that it reflects who you are. That was my dad’s message, and his dad’s before him.

My grandfather was one of the most unique men I have ever known. Hard as nails. Never smiled in photos unless his grandkids were around. That was when the tough shell cracked, just a little, and you could see his heart shine through.

He loved his family, golf, and discipline. And somehow, wherever he went, he always found another Montez, some long-lost cousin or relative he had never met, and made a connection. He believed family was meant to stay close no matter the miles. That stuck with me too.

He was not only a man of pride but also a man of history. He worked communications in the Air Force during the Korean War, tapping out messages on a teletype machine. Later, he worked for NASA on Apollo 11, still in comms. From the moon landing to my college graduation, he showed up. I will never forget looking over and seeing him there at Jacksonville University.

He had four kids, eleven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and counting. He scared the hell out of me sometimes, but I loved him, and I respected him more than words can cover.

My grandfather, Beto, left behind more than a legacy. He left us a standard. A Montez kind of standard. Pride in who you are, pride in what you do, and pride in the family you keep close.

I’m forever grateful for these lessons and the man I’m becoming because of them.
