F I V E years ago today, I grabbed scissors & cut all the straight pieces of hair I saw🥵🥺😂

My big chop was an outward expression of the internal healing & acceptance I was going through. in 2016, I began to love myself completely & authentically. When I was 3 years old, my natural hair “needed” to be straighten, so it was easier to manage. In my culture, going to the salon every Saturday was a religious practice. Straight hair was beautiful & curls weren’t. (IYKYK 🇩🇴) I didn’t know what my realllll hair was like. Jan 10th, 2017 I got tired of not knowing.

yes, I was scaredddd & so nervous.
yes, I didn’t always like the short cut.
yes, I didn’t feel pretty at first.
yes, it was a whole process that took patience, YT tutorials, oils, products, care, love, unlearning & knowledge.
y e s s s s, it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made!!!
I love my hair. I love my curl pattern. I love that my hair takes up space. I love the hang time. I love the arm cramps from hours of detangling & styling. I love what my hair will tell you about my ancestry. My hair = my big flex.

To all my people at any stage of your natural hair journey, know you got a sis cheering you on, ready to hold you accountable to oil treatments, trimming, protective styles, good products, & to loving allll of you! Those of y’all ahead of me in this journey, share your process & wisdom!! I’m so ready to learn & grow with you.

My sister thought it was a good idea to move 1600 miles away. & little does she know my mental health is already declining and it hasn’t even been a week. lol

I kid our chick 🐥 has flown away from the nest & we couldn’t be anymore proud. Praying this new chapter brings all the great things the unknown has to offer. I love you sissy.

Before moving to Puerto Rico, I had a 15 day residency at the Museum of Fine Arts in Tallahassee, Florida with my family @undercurrentsco !! 15 days. A new place. A familiar practice, felt/seen through a different lens.

This opportunity was my first residency outside of the Tri-State area and I’m still finding the words for what it gave me. There was something deeply meaningful about being away from home, entering a new environment, and allowing myself to be fully present in the work. To listen. To question. To witness. To be challenged. To be held.

I learned so much in these 15 days—not just as a dancer, but as an artist, collaborator, and human being. I left with new questions, new perspectives, and a deeper relationship to my practice and this family.

Grateful for the space to grow. Grateful for these beautiful people who continue to shape me. Grateful for this work, this lineage, and all the ways it keeps asking me to become. Carrying it with me forever. 🤎⚓️

very late but the Spring semester deserved its moment✨nothing fills my tank more than doing what I know I’m called to do- teach, mentor, encourage, dance.

I grew a lot this semester. Accepted the challenge of choreographing hip hop for ages 9-12 and increased my capacity. Every group I taught holds a special place in my heart! so thankful ❤️‍🔥🫂
