Mukantaganzwa Leonile, 35 and her daughter.

Leonile was 10 years old during the genocide.
She had 5 brothers, of whom the youngest died of tiredness as they had to move consistently for two weeks. Their father was injured and died later. Their neighbors helped them to escape to Congo as refugees.
She returned to Rwanda in 1997. She got married to another survivor in 2008 and got three children.
In 2013, she opened a boutique.

I asked Leonile if she has ever told her children about the genocide. She said she tries to tell them the whole story gradually and she focuses on the forgiveness part.

In Kicukiro district of Kigali, Rwanda, the survivors of the 1994 genocide are having a new start.

In ‘The Many Disguises of Miss Invisible’ (2022), Doaa Nasr (@du_doaa) documents the feelings of fear, anxiety, loneliness, uncertainty, and internal war that women in Upper Egypt experience with their ideas.

Doaa says: “Here, it feels that women are raised to obey and not argue. I am a very shy person. I escape my loneliness, my fears, and my overthinking brain by watching TV, dancing, and photographing, but food remains my number one go-to. Sometimes I see myself in a movie character, as it resembles the ideas and struggles I have in reality. This makes me get attached to this character and live all the experiences they get through. I wish I had superpowers that could help me travel through time and space so that whenever my mom calls my name, I would show up immediately. I believe in fairytales, I feel that one day and despite my reality, I will have my own ‘happy ever after.’”

Doaa Nasr is a freelance photographer and visual storyteller from Manflout, Asyut, in Upper Egypt. The year 2011 was a turning point in her life. At the time, Egypt witnessed a political and emotional upheaval, with protests everywhere in the country. Capturing certain moments and incidents during this time gave her strength and a sense of freedom.

Upper Egypt is a very conservative society where working in photojournalism is difficult for women. Through her work, she tries to change people’s views towards women as journalists.
