Why is selling art so hard?

@du_mplings and I talked about something that doesn’t get discussed much: how tricky it can be to sell a piece you own.

Linda buys art for the joy it brings her, so she rarely thinks about selling. A full wall might be the only reason she would. But it’s not always clear how you would go about wanting to sell. While valuation is the easier part, most galleries prefer you hold on to a work for five to ten years.

One of the things I loved about my conversation with Linda Du (@du_mplings) is how differently she thinks about the idea of collecting.

Linda brings together three worlds that don’t always overlap: art, technology and finance. But despite her background in economics and investing, she doesn’t primarily think about art in financial terms. Instead, she introduced me to the economic concept of “utility” applied to collecting: the joy and satisfaction an artwork brings you.

I was really struck by how closely her collection is tied to her life. Every piece has a personal story behind it, whether it was acquired to mark a particular life moment or gifted by a friend. For Linda, even life itself can become a collecting experience, as we collect memories along the way.

We also talked about her family history, the challenges of navigating the resale market, and how years of experiencing art at Burning Man have shaped what she looks for in art today.
